AUBURN, Ind. – Indiana State Police are investigating after someone found human skeletal remains in a wooded area in northeastern Indiana Saturday.

Police say the remains were discovered between 1:30 and 2 p.m. in an area west of C&A Tool Engineering in Auburn.

Authorities weren’t able to immediately identify the person due to the level of decomposition. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine cause of death and help determine the person’s identity.
Officers say there is no outward indication of foul play at this time, but information gathered from the autopsy could “provide necessary leads for investigators to help make a positive determination of how, when and why that person came to be where the discovery was made.”

AUBURN, Ind. (AP) — Skeletal remains discovered in a wooded area on the edge of a northeastern Indiana city have been identified as those of a man who was reported missing nearly five months earlier.

Indiana State Police say the remains found Feb. 17 in Auburn belonged to 59-year-old Richard W. McComb Jr. of Auburn. He was reported missing to the Auburn Police Department on Sept. 25.

Police say investigators are trying to learn how and why McComb came to be where his remains were located in woods that are surrounded by a Walmart store and other commercial and industrial businesses in the city about 20 miles north of Fort Wayne.
Police have said no signs of foul play were initially found, but authorities have not released a cause of death.
