62-year-old Jonathan Scott Torgerson of Columbia Falls, a physician at North Valley Hospital in Whitefish was reported overdue Saturday night after skiing alone outside the boundary of Whitefish Mountain Resort just before a storm moved in, bringing strong winds and a foot of snow to the area.

On Sunday, wind gusts up to 50 mph and wind chills near minus 30 were reported near the top of Big Mountain.

Torgerson's family told searchers he was wearing an avalanche transceiver but they had not picked up a signal.

[h=1]Search for missing Flathead skier continues[/h]
UPDATE: We are learning Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s deputies are heading to Whitefish to help look for Dr. Jonathan Torgerson.

Sheriff Leo Dutton tells MTN that Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry has requested assistance.
Three Search and Rescue members are responding now, and Dutton says more deputies will lend a hand as the weekend approaches.
Dutton adds “We will do all we can to support his mission.”
WHITEFISH – The search for a Columbia Falls man who went missing over the weekend has entered its fifth day.

Jonathan Torgerson, 62, was reported missing Saturday after he was reportedly skiing alone in the backcountry in an out-of-bounds area near Big Mountain referred to as the Kona Area.

Search operations continued Wednesday both in the air and on the ground with more than 30 volunteer searchers.

Weather conditions continued to improve Wednesday, with clearer visibility. Below zero temperatures, high winds, snow and low visibility have previously hampered search efforts significantly both in the air and on the ground.

Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, whose office is leading the search, says while the negative temperatures are trying on searchers, they are putting everything they’ve got into it.
He said that on Wednesday searchers are doing more thorough sweeps of areas that had previously been just cursory searched. So far there have been no results, but Sheriff Curry says they are confident they will find him.
“Certainly he is out there and it’s our job to bring him home to his family,” said Sheriff Curry.

So his avalanche transmitter did not work apparently. Sounds like he did the right thing by wearing one.
I'd sue the company. [emoji35]
