Family members of Gill Packham (57) reported her missing on Thursday, 22 February. She was last seen leaving her home early that morning in her green BMW. She’d been on her way to Springfield Convent School, where she works in the office.

That evening police were called to the scene of a burning BMW at the Diep River train station.

The burnt body of an unidentified female was found in the boot of the vehicle.

The police are awaiting feedback from forensics in terms of the post mortem reports.

A Cape Town resident saw a green BMW parked in a bushy area near a train station last week. She said, “I came from the municipality’s office at 3:45pm and on my way home‚ I noticed the car. The one thing that stood out was that the car didn’t have number plates. My first thought was that the car must have been stolen. I don’t think the security guards noticed the car because it was hidden so well”.

As the station was always busy with commuters catching trains and security or guards patrolled the platforms, she thought it odd that anyone would park a stolen vehicle there as the area was known for muggings. The car remained there for the rest of the day.

Later that evening‚ the woman was woken up by her daughter‚ who had alerted the fire department of a car burning next to the railway station. It was the same green BMW.

She said, “The flames were huge and intense. I peered through my window and it was busy with police members and firemen. They worked right through the night”.

The following day, the charred body of a woman was found in the boot. Rumours started almost immediately that it could be the body of Gill Packham who had been reported missing.

A burnt patch of grass and a scorched tree are all remains from the burning vehicle.

Gill Packham, 57 was reported missing on 22 February. The same day a body was found in the boot of a burnt-out BMW at the Diep River train station and was later identified through DNA analysis.

On Saturday, an Afrikaans newspaper named the arrested man as Rob Packham, Gill’s husband. They also reported that Gill had allegedly died from a blow to the back of the head.

Neatly dressed in a blue checked shirt and red jersey, Rob Packham wept in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court where he appeared on charges of murdering his wife and defeating the ends of justice.

He is accused of the premeditated murder of his wife Gill and of destroying evidence relating to her death.

Prosecutor Benjamin said the State intended to oppose Packham's release on bail, fearing that evidence "might be lost" if he was released.

Defence attorney Mathewson requested that Packham be held at Diep River police station but this was denied by the Magistrate. He will now be held at Pollsmoor Prison until his next appearance on Friday, to determine the schedule of the offences of which he is accused.

The couple's daughters, Nicola and Kerry Anne, both attended their father's first court appearance.

RP is facing a charge of premeditated murder and the state has opposed bail.

Rob‚ a chartered accountant‚ is the general manager for the soft drink company Twizza‚ according to his LinkedIn profile. Before that he was the CEO of Cape Cookies which‚ in 2014 joined Habitat for Humanity SA to build homes for the poor.

“There is no greater pleasure than being able to give back to the community‚ making people feel good and to bring a smile to the faces of the children!” Packham said at the time.

Blood, presumably belonging to Gill Packham, was found in the home that she shared with her husband. The blood was found in the garage as well as the en suite bathroom attached to the main bedroom and on the door to the driver's side of the accused's car.

Prosecutor Benjamin told the court that the accused had contacted a colleague to arrange an alibi, telling the person to claim that they had been in a meeting at 08:30 that morning, when he was meant to be at work. However, his cellphone records indicated that he had been in Constantia or Diep River at the time.

DNA taken from her daughters confirmed that it was her body that had been found in the boot of the car, once the fire had been extinguished.

Benjamin told the court that the accused was the last person with Gill.

Security cameras allegedly captured someone driving a car similar to Gill's on that day, which did not have any registration plates.

Benjamin said it was a known fact that the Packhams were experiencing marital problems and that he had sent his wife a cellphone message to say that he was "thinking of calling it a day".

The State argued that it was clear that RP had tried to destroy evidence and that police have still not located Gill's cellphone. He added that the Police were still looking for other evidence but did not elaborate.

Defence attorney Mathewson said that footage of someone driving Gill's BMW was shown to the couple's children, who could not identify their father as the driver.

He pointed out that the State did not have a murder weapon, and there was no evidence that the blood found by the police's forensics team was Gill's. He added that there was no proof that RP had assaulted his wife and caused her death and no reasonable evidence for his arrest. He submitted that RP had been arrested without a warrant.

Mathewson said RP had driven around to look for his wife that day and searched in places that they frequented.

CP started to weep when Mathewson said that he wanted to support his children at their mother's funeral, which is expected to take place on Tuesday.

The court is waiting on a certificate from the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine whether Rob Packham is charged with a schedule 5 or schedule 6 offence.

He is back in court on Friday the 9th of March.

If you’re unfamiliar with South African law, the following will be useful.

Schedule 5: Murder (the intentional unlawful killing of a person).
The minimum sentence for “normal” murder is 15 years.

Schedule 6: Planned or premeditated murder.
Minimum sentence of 25 years before being eligible for parole.

According to MyBroadband, police used a section 205 subpoena to obtain Gill’s cellphone call records as well as those of her family:

Rapport said the content of text messages between RP and wife Gill has aided police in answering critical questions about her death. There was “a lot of interaction” on the couple’s phones on the day of Gill’s disappearance, it added.

In court proceedings, Prosecutor Benjamin indicated that the state was opposing bail as they believed Packham would try to destroy evidence.

Apparently the inmates of Pollsmoor Prison aren’t very kind to those accused of murdering their wives.

I'm going for Schedule 6! So many of these murders seem to follow the same or similar pattern. Thanks for the link, JJ.

Thanks for this JJ,

What the heck is it with SA men murdering their wives/girlfriends? I guess they think if they get away with it it's cheaper than divorce?!
