For those of you who want to discuss the terrorism factor and all that goes along with it you now have your own thread.
CLICK HERE for the Rampage Killings and Terrorist Attacks forum. Talk about all the issues surrounding terrorism as it relates to this case and terrorism in general.

This thread is about the 49 victims and the shooter in the Pulse Nightclub killing in Orlando.

On this thread you can talk about the victims, (that would be nice) talk about the actual crime, the shooter, the shooter's father's comments and so on.

There will be some crossover with the thread on terrorism. I realize this. However, it is up to you to pick the right place to post your opinions.

If your opinions are about terrorism in general and in this case, radical Islam, sleeper cells and so on then you need to CLICK HERE and post in the terrorism forum.

If you want to discuss the Orlando case then this is the thread for you.

If you want me to be black and white about what you can and cannot post that's just something I can't do. You have to ask yourself if what you are about to post is directly connected to Orlando or more connected to terrorism. Then it's up to you to decide which forum is correct for your post.

DON'T BE A JERK TO YOUR FELLOW POSTERS. If you remember this golden rule of posting and post in the right thread, you are going to be just fine.

Carry on please...

Trial opens for widow of Pulse nightclub shooter as jury selection begins (with clip)

"...Selecting a fair jury

Defense attorneys and prosecutors are considering prospective jurors from a pool of 600 people. Jury selection is expected to take between seven and 10 days.

Putting together an impartial jury will be a difficult task, especially because the trial is being held in downtown Orlando at the Middle District of Florida courthouse, about 2 miles from where the massacre took place.

Six of the 10 prospective jurors questioned on Thursday progressed to the final jury pool.

Four were dismissed for a variety of reasons. One was a mother on maternity leave who lives two blocks from the Pulse nightclub, while another was a man who grew up near Pulse and said his professional responsibilities would make it difficult to give his full attention to the trial, which the judge and prosecutors have estimated could take four to five weeks.

Another woman was excused in the afternoon after she expressed a distaste for guns and people who shoot for sport at gun ranges.

Orlando attorney and former CNN legal analyst Mark O'Mara said there are several factors that will make the jury selection challenging.

"It is going to be amazingly difficult to seat a jury in this case because not only do the potential jurors live in central Florida, but we have had an enormous backlash against terrorist acts in the past 17 years since 2001, and this case, like the Boston Marathon case, will be felt as an opportunity to right those wrongs," O'Mara said..."

Noor Salman trial: Potential jurors questioned about Islam, news coverage of case

"Seventeen potential jurors were questioned in Noor Salman’s trial Monday, with seven of them staying in the jury pool and eight excused.

U.S. District Judge Paul Byron held off making decisions on two more jurors, who said they have to check with their work or their family to see if they will be able to sit through the three-week trial...

Salman, who has been animated in court, looked to her lawyer with eyebrows raised and nodded when another woman described beliefs that some Muslims are influenced to do bad while others are peaceful...

Jurors who knew people killed or injured but said they could remain impartial were kept in the jury pool.

Byron said he is looking to narrow the pool to about 56 people, from which a jury of 12 and about six alternates will be chosen. Another 18 jurors are expected in court Tuesday, Byron said.

Last week, Byron said testimony in the trial likely will begin about March 12 or 14, and he expects the trial will take three weeks."

Noor Salman trial: Potential jurors weigh challenge of deciding fate of Pulse gunman's widow

"The jury pool in Noor Salman’s trial has at least 30 people in it after the fourth day of jury selection for Pulse gunman Omar Mateen’s widow.

U.S. District Judge Paul Byron has said he wants about 58 prospective jurors before attorneys narrow it down to 12 jurors and six alternates who will hear the case...

Over the trial’s first four days, potential jurors have faced questions on a variety of topics, from their feelings about the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, to their views on guns and knowledge of the massacre at Pulse....

Testimony is expected to begin next week and last three more weeks"

Defying Evidence, Pulse Shooter Widow Claims Omar Mateen Didn't Target Gays

"Defense attorneys say there’s no way to know if Omar Mateen targeted the LGBT community when he attacked the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and instigated one of the deadliest mass shootings in American history. Attorneys for the dead shooter’s wife have asked a judge to prohibit federal prosecutors from suggesting that motive for the massacre, and say Mateen’s phone records show evidence to the contrary....

Swift’s motion says prosecutors should not be allowed to say Mateen targeted the gay community because he also visited Disney Springs near Walt Disney World the evening of the attack and loaded directions in his phone to EVE Orlando, a high-end lounge that does not specifically cater to LGBT attendees.

Salman’s legal team says data obtained from Mateen’s cell phone indicates he had no firm plans to go to Pulse...."

Jury selection surpasses halfway-point in Noor Salman trial

"ORLANDO, Fla. —
Inside federal court, as each potential juror is questioned the so-called jury pool is taking shape for the trial of the Pulse shooter's widow, Noor Salman.

Ten more people were added to that pool, from which the actual jury will be impaneled, Tuesday....

The court is looking to get about 60 people in the so-called jury pool before the jury is seated.

The judge has said he believes jury selection is on target to be completed by the end of the week, or early next week, and that testimony will begin by or before March 14..."

POTENTIAL SALMAN JURORS WORRY ABOUT SAFETY, RETALIATION AFTER TRIAL

"
Orlando’s reaction to a verdict has been the focus on day five of jury selection in the trial of the Pulse gunman’s widow.

Potential jurors were asked if they felt pressure from the community at large to deliver a guilty verdict in the case.

Some jurors expressed concern for their safety or retaliation after a verdict, especially if people knew who they were.

U.S. District Judge Paul Byron explained the court will protect the privacy of the jury. The proceedings are not televised or photographed, the jurors will be referred to by number not name and the courtroom sketch artist can not draw the jury...."

Potential Noor Salman jurors cite ties to Pulse, safety concerns
Day 5 of selection concludes with 42 potential jurors

"...U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron, who is presiding over the federal case against 31-year-old Noor Salman, questioned 18 potential jurors Wednesday, inquiring about their views on Islam, their ability to be impartial and any possible biases they have.

Of the 18 potential jurors questioned Wednesday, eight were dismissed for cause and the other 10 remained in the pool.

Those potential jurors who were dismissed spoke of biases, safety concerns and ties to the attack at Pulse nightclub June 12, 2016 that left 49 people dead and dozens of others injured....

Unlike in the previous four days of selection, no potential juror mentioned direct ties to Pulse or any of the victims of the attack, but there were multiple jurors who cited indirect connections....

Salman wore all black and spoke only to Moreno, leaning in close to discuss the proceedings. She mostly focused her attention to happenings at the defense table and refrained from using wide hand gestures as she has in previous days...."

POTENTIAL SALMAN JUROR DISMISSED, BELIEVED GUNMAN TARGETED LGBTQ COMMUNITY

"A potential juror was excused in the Noor Salman trial after revealing a connection to the LGBTQ community. Salman is the widow of the Pulse gunman.

Juror #211 told the judge that she had a close family member that is LGBTQ and married with a partner and her perception that the shooter targeted the gay community would prevent her from being impartial in the case.

U.S. District Judge Paul Byron indicated prosecutors might argue the shooter Omar Mateen was instead motivated by terrorism. He dismissed the juror when she said she “couldn’t be certain” she would remain impartial during the trial..."

Jury selection in trial for Pulse gunman's widow nears completion
Court ends Friday just shy of completing jury pool selection process

"...Many of the potential jurors selected to remain thus far work in fields related to science, technology or math. More than 30 of them are Caucasian and the remainder are black or Hispanic. Thirty-six are women and 19 are men.

They’ve all acknowledged that they’ve seen at least some news coverage about the attack Salman’s husband, Omar Mateen, carried out at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, but they indicated that they could set that knowledge aside and judge the case based only on the evidence selected...

Salman’s attorneys claim that she was the victim of domestic abuse...

Once again, Salman wore all black Friday and refrained from addressing the court. She often spoke with her attorney Linda Moreno, whispering and nodding to her as potential jurors were being questioned."

Potential jurors in Noor Salman case thrown out over sensitivity to evidence
Jury selection process remains difficult

"...A number of jurors have been dismissed for a variety of reasons -- including some dismissed because of how much time the trial is expected to take -- but News 6 learned Wednesday that several potential jurors have been dismissed because of their sensitivity to graphic evidence that will be shown in court....

Last month, Judge Paul Bryon ruled that video of Mateen firing shots into the club will be admitted in trial but video from officers' body cameras showing them bringing out the bodies of those killed will not be shown."

55 of necessary 56 potential jurors admitted to pool;

34 are women and 21 are men.

Defense attorneys asked the judge for makeup and new clothes for Salman for next week. He agreed.

The judge will narrow the jury pool to a panel of 18 people who will hear the case -- 12 jurors and four alternates. He said he expects the jury to be selected by Monday.

Opening statements are scheduled to begin Wednesday.

The jury pool for #SalmanTrial has reached 56, which Judge Paul Byron said would be the number needed to start the next process: seating the jury.
However, more jurors are being questioned, which isn't surprising given the judge has also said he'd like two or more additions.

Noor Salman trial: Family shows up at federal courthouse

"ORLANDO --
As jury selection wraps up for the trial of Noor Salman, the widow of the Pulse shooter, her family came to the Orlando federal courthouse Monday to show their support.

"We know she's innocent. There's nothing changed on us," said Susan Adidh, Salman's aunt. "Because if we knew she was involved or anything, we wouldn't be here."...

Byron reached his goal of 56 potential jurors, plus one, on Monday. The 57 potential jurors in the pool for this trial are now in a holding pattern until the afternoon session happens....

Court will reconvene at 2 p.m. Monday with striking of potential jurors, whittling down the 57 in the pool to 12, plus six alternates.

After the strike process is complete, Byron said the court will take up the defense's recently-filed motion to "proffer," or offer up, arguments it doesn't think federal prosecutors should be allowed to make in their opening statements.

Also, the prosecution on Sunday filed its own motion over 911 calls.

Opening statements in Salman's federal trial are expected to begin Wednesday."

"...On the eighth day of jury selection Noor Salman's family appeared in court. This is their first time appearing at the Orlando federal courthouse since the trial started on March 1.

News 6 spoke with the family as they walked outside the courthouse. Noor Salman's uncle, Al Salman, said he is confident that his niece is innocent.

"I know she's innocent. I knew from day one. It's not going to change. I know 100 percent she's innocent," Al Salman said.

The Salman family said Noor Salman's son is being taken care of by his maternal grandmother. The family told News 6 she did not make the trip from California for health reasons...."

A federal jury was seated Monday afternoon.

One text recovered from Salmon’s phone reads “If ur mom calls say nimo invited you out and noor wants to stay home.” Another reads, “She asked where you were xoxo. Love you.”

“Nimo,” or Nemo, is the name of one of Mateen’s friends, whom defense attorneys said Mateen often used to cover his tracks when he went out to cheat on his wife.

Federal prosecutors revealed in court Monday they have no intention of arguing that the attack specifically targeted Orlando’s LBGTQ community, but that it was simply an act of terrorism and the crowded Pulse nightclub on a Saturday night was a perfect soft target.

Salmon’s family has flown in from San Francisco for what’s expected to be a three-week trial.
