Lo and behold, I have run across more info on him: Those missing from the Trinity County area
An unsuccessful search for him with cadaver dogs took place in the vicinity of Hwy 299 and Trinity Mountain Rd. His truck turned up a month after his disappearance, in a farm community near Fresno CA.

The report was taken by the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, based on McDonald’s past association to the Junction City area. A person of interest was developed; however, the individual died shortly after the investigation began. McDonald’s vehicle was later located in the Fresno area.
The case remains open, although McDonald had gone missing from an area other than Trinity County.
