The school is at 5901 Northwest Pine Island Rd. in Parkland.

[h=1]After Parkland Shooting, A Florida Gun Owner Gives Up His AR-57[/h]
https://www.npr.org/2018/02/17/5868...ooting-a-florida-gun-owner-gives-up-his-ar-57

It's come after a lot of soul searching. Everybody always says - you know, it's the big argument right now - everybody's offering thoughts and prayers but nothing else. And I thought, well, this is something I can do that I think is right. And it's something I can do that might spark a change. You know, my whole goal was maybe to inspire one friend on my Facebook page to do the same thing. And maybe that friend would inspire one other person. And who knows? I totally didn't expect for this to go the way it did and as fast as it did.

One thing I want to point out, it doesn't seem adoptive mother wanted sons to have guns. She called police on NC numerous times. When did he buy his guns? Was mother still alive?

"In spite of the police reports and his mental health history, Cruz was able to pass a background check and buy the rifle in February 2017. In Florida, absent a felony or domestic abuse conviction, almost any adult can walk into a gun store and walk out the same day with an AR-15 rifle and a cache of ammunition after clearing a simple background check.

Cruz also managed to legally purchase at least five other guns in the past year, said a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation. They were recovered from the home where he was living with a friend’s family after the shootings."

Mom died this past November 2017

I don't recall seeing this previously, about what he was like before high school...

When Nikolas Cruz was a student at Westglades Middle School, he was constantly in trouble for insulting teachers and staff, using profanity, disruptive behavior, unexcused absences and at least one fight.

His mother was called in more than a dozen times for conferences and Cruz was frequently sent to counseling, according to the records.*

Anthony Borges, Stoneman Douglas student shot five times, returns to intensive care

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/b...shooting-borges-condition-20180308-story.html

nthony Borges, a student hailed as a hero of the Parkland shooting, has been returned to the intensive care unit and faces multiple surgeries for a possible abdominal infection.

During the shooting last month at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the 15-year-old used his body to block a classroom door, saving the lives of students. Shot five times, he was among the most seriously wounded of the survivors of the Feb. 14 rampage that killed 17 students and teachers.

But by withdrawing the not guilty plea, the Broward Public Defender’s Office sends a signal consistent with what they’ve said since the early days of the case.

Two days after Cruz, 19, was accused of shooting dozens at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Public Defender Howard Finkelstein said in interviews that guilt is not an issue in the case. Cruz would plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of life in prison, Finkelstein said.

While Finkelstein’s office had no comment on Thursday’s development, the decision to stand mute allows the defense to proceed without claiming to the public, the victims or the court that Cruz did not commit the crime.

“Pleading not guilty is a matter of course, part of the process of due process,” said defense lawyer Michael Gottlieb, who is not connected to the case. “In a case like this, that’s as sensitive in the community as this case is, pleading not guilty might be seen as offensive. This community is still hurting because of what Nikolas Cruz did.”

Prosecutors have not said whether they will seek the death penalty.

BROWARD COUNTY
Broward offered tax breaks for maker of Russian AK-47 assault rifles

Thirty-two months earlier, however, on June 23, 2015, Furr and his commission colleagues unanimously approved with no discussion a resolution offering county incentive funds in support of a Florida jobs-for-tax refund deal seeking to attract to Pompano Beach the authorized U.S. manufacturer of the Russian-style AK-47 assault rifle.

Accused shooter Nikolas Cruz had an AK-47 among his arsenal, police said. And the company’s distributors included Sunrise Tactical Supply, the Coral Springs store where authorities said Cruz obtained the AR-15 rifle he used in the attack.

County officials kept secret the name of the company being offered the incentives, as is typical in economic development deals, despite the use of taxpayer funds. Public documents mention in passing that the company made and distributed “firearms,” but use only its code name, “Project 762.”

[h=1]Public Mass Murderers and Federal Mental Health Background Checks for Firearm Purchases[/h]Our study examines whether increasing the robustness of the mental health background database will likely prevent potential public mass murderers from buying guns. Building on research that shows that serious mental illness contributes little to the risk of interpersonal violence and, further, that few persons with serious mental illness acquire gun-disqualifying mental health records, we examine whether public mass murderers are among the small percentage of those with serious mental illness who do have gun-disqualifying mental health records. Using a large sample of 106 US offenders who used a firearm to commit a public mass murder from 1990 to 2014, we find that half of the offenders had a history of mental illness or mental health treatment but that less than 5% had gun-disqualifying mental health records. Implications of these findings and recommendations for further research are discussed. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
