In 1999, 41 year old John Annibel was convicted of murdering Debbie Sloan.
Annibel is/was a suspect in the following cold case homicides:

Janet Lee Bowman, 30 September 1975: https://www.websleuths.com/forums/s...eka-30-September-1975&p=13979175#post13979175

Karen Frances Fisher, 18 January 1976: https://www.websleuths.com/forums/s...-Head-18-January-1976&p=13979162#post13979162

Andrea LaDeRoute, 17 March 1980: https://www.websleuths.com/forums/s...22-Fortuna-March-1980&p=13979154#post13979154

Georgina Pacheco, 1988 (since solved)

Debbie Sloan, 29 November 1998 (forwhich Annibel was convicted): Ukiah Daily Journal, 26 February 1999: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/2202170/john_annibel_and_debra_sloan_mentions/

The true crime book “Deadfall” supplies info. I am rereading it to try to learn who the other two victims were.

Has this guy been questioned regarding the murders of Kerry Graham and Francine Trimble?

Also, the disappearance of Karen Mitchell could well be his handiwork.

Thanks for starting this thread, burblestein. As I’ve mentioned on other threads, Annibel’s family were neighbors of ours in the hills outside Myers Flat, Humboldt County at the time of Sherry Lynn Smith’s murder. His grandparents were good friends and neighbors on our road. I don’t recall meeting John, but we knew kids he hung out with, one of whom burgled our house in 1977, and was known to commit burglaries with John. I have no doubt that he was responsible for her murder, even though he was never charged.

I expect he’s been questioned about other cases more than once.

It may seem like a waste of time and energy to prosecute Annibel because he is serving time for murder. However, Sherry Lynn, Janet, Karen and Andrea deserve justice.

Do we know what happened with the DNA testing of blood from Annibel’s apartment?

Annibel lived with DeLaRoute in Fortuna when he was 22 and she was 20. He reported her missing March 18, 1980. Her body was never found.
Blood evidence from the 18-year-old case taken from the couple's apartment will now be tested for a possible DNA match, a procedure that was not available in 1980.
Annibel continues to deny any involvement in either woman's death.

Interesting article talks a lot about Annibel, some of it in connection with Georgina Pacheco (killer has now been identified...not Annibel). His daughter comments several times, poor thing.

What are the chances John Annibel will be freed? Well, he's in on a SECOND degree conviction, and eligible for parole in six years....

Re Pettibon's query: No one seems to have connected the Mitchell and Graham/Trimble cases to Annibel except you. But it does seem logical. And let's take note of the fact that Karen Mitchell's disappearance is generally considered to be one in a series of five cold cases called the Humboldt Five.
