Janet was a student at Humboldt State University. She was a native of San Diego. She was 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weighed 95 pounds. Janet was last seen at the Social Services office in Eureka on 30 September 1975.

Her body was found some days later north of Blue Lake, secreted near a truck scale. She had been beaten, then strangled to death. She was only partially clothed, and had been raped. This is according to Robert Scott's book, “Deadfall.”

Because of the resemblance to the Sherry Lynn Smith case, John Annibel is considered a prime suspect in Janet's death.

Annibel is presently imprisoned for the murder of Debbie Sloan.

This series Kym is writing will be very interesting. I’m certainly going to keep an eye on it. From the link…

In the fall of 1975, the murder of a San Diego woman enrolled at Humboldt State University, preceded three other similar deaths in Humboldt County that would occur over the next nine months. Four women’s bodies were found within those nine months, strangled and raped. Law enforcement and the public speculated whether the deaths were the result of a serial killer. To date, the homicides remain unsolved, their similarities unmistakable but not definitively proven to be the work of only one perpetrator.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we at RHBB, will be covering these cold cases individually. We will then take an in-depth look at any similarities or differences as well as possible suspects.

Normally, I’d immediately suspect John Annibel, but he was 22 in 1980 when his girlfriend disappeared, so he would have only been 17 or 18 when Janet was killed. Of course, he may have started young.

Cold Case – HSU Student Found Strangled and Raped in a Case That May Have Been the Work of a Serial Killer
