Does anyone have a newspapers.com subscription that can look at this old article? The free text version is garbled and hard to read. I was able to get that he was last seen at an ice cream parlor which differs from recent reports and was just wondering if there is anything else that could be useful?

Also, this article adds that his family believes John may have been involved in an altercation with another kid that night, over a girl. His sister seems to feel that it wasn't intended for anyone to be killed, but that the person(s) involved panicked and hid his body.

There seem to have been a lot of rumors.

Eta: this is the same article as the connecttristates one that someone else posted, just a different url for it.

To think John could have possibly accidentally died, and then the kid he fought gets scared and dumps the body, presumably had help, and then just let John's family live in utter agony until they die. How the hell do you live your life knowing what you've done and what you're putting the poor family through.
Man, he may have been okay if they'd gotten him to a hospital. Sometimes I just can't handle how horrible people are.

John's 53rd anniversary of disappearance was yesterday. Bumping.

This ^ ^ ^article regarding this case has always been heartbreaking. It's surprising and disappointing that the truth still hasn't come out after all these years. Small town secrets are difficult to keep hidden because people like to talk. I've lived in a similar small community and it's impossible for someone to not know something. Especially when there was plenty of gossip and speculation running amok. It was mentioned that most people were uncooperative in the investigation which speaks volumes. In addition, the local LE also chose to not reveal the polygraph results of the potential suspects. Sounds like it could have been a cover up for the accused due to their community relations or ties to the police. Not uncommon that small town cops often turn a blind eye.

According to the article, John's father was quoted he had heard that (they?) "Threw him to the hogs, burned him up with a bunch of old junk cars, put him in a hog feeder"? Was there any validity to these claims or was it just townsfolk speculating? It doesn't appear that much came out of it if it was indeed, thoroughly investigated.

Sadly John's brother and mother passed in 2008 and his father in 2010. He has a sister who is alive and deserves closure. People know what happened and they refuse to cooperate.
poor john ... the boy who killed him is likely to have committed suicide and if it was because of a girl it was an outburst of the moment but still he should never have died from something like that

I used to live in Quincy, Illinois, about 40 miles away, and never heard of this case until now! I agree, it sounds like somebody has to know something. The area is mostly flat and treeless, so it wouldn't be all that easy to hide a body.
