I found an article stating that his remains were found in December 2016. Unfortunately they require a subscription to access the whole article, but a small part is visible.

Marengo County Sheriff Ben Bates confirmed that the remains of Woodie Earl Thompson, 48, was found near his silver Nissan truck off a rural road near Vineland.
