Paul Hanks, an attorney and real estate broker, left San Diego on Sunday, his 54th birthday, to go hiking in Joshua Tree. But Hanks never checked into the hotel room he had reserved for the evening.

He is 5 feet, 9 inches tall with dark hair.

Search teams are deployed in the area and Joshua Tree National Park Search and Rescue volunteers have an incident command center at the trailhead.

Hanks’ white pickup truck was found at the Maze Loop parking lot, the same trail where Joseph Orbeso and Rachel Nguyen’s car was discovered before the OC couple’s bodies were found in the park with fatal gunshot wounds.

[h=1]Found Joshua Tree hiker fell 20 ft, buried self in sand while missing[/h]
According to Hanks's son-in-law, he suffered a fractured skull and broken ankle after falling 20 feet. He said Hanks talked about burying himself in the sand to keep him warm, and using rainwater to keep himself hydrated. He is expected to make a full recovery.
"His family told us he’s in very good physical condition, and he’s a frequent visitor to the park. So that’s one thing in his favor. and comes up here quite regularly," said George Land, the Public Information Officer of Joshua Tree National Park.

What a miracle he was found alive!

The weather clearly saved him. If it had been hotter or colder, or drier, he would have been in real trouble.

Yup come June, July, August, September you do not want to hike here. Take my advice everyone and soak in any pool you can find with a pina colata - even the pool will be 100 degrees at least in the summer. There’s really no escaping it. Come let us entertain you any other months of the year and enjoy our beautiful landscape when it is SAFE :) (AND DONT LITTER AND DRIVE LIKE A JERK). This fellow was lucky he followed the rule.
