La Mesa Police Say They Solved a Cold Case
A 38-year-old man was in custody Wednesday, linked by DNA evidence to the 1986 stabbing death of an ex-girlfriend's mother, La Mesa police said.
Marc Jernigan was taken into custody yesterday without incident when police went to his workplace in the 12000 block of Carmel Country Road with a search warrant.
Jernigan was booked into the San Diego County Jail on suspicion of murder in the death of June George on Aug. 8, 1986.
George, who was 47 at the time, was found by her daughter stabbed to death around 5:20 p.m. in the kitchen of her La Mesa home in the 8600 block of Mariposa Street.
Jernigan and George's daughter, Kathy Keller, ended their relationship just a few weeks before George was stabbed.
The La Mesa Police Department and San Diego County District Attorney's Office used DNA evidence to link Jernigan to the slaying.
Jernigan is scheduled for arraignment Thursday.
