Authorities continued their search Saturday for the St. Lucie County woman who disappeared in Indian River County Friday night.

Assunta Susy Tomassi was last seen about 5:41 p.m. Friday walking south in the 700 block of U.S. 1, the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said. Tomassi, who suffers from dementia, had previously visited the Quilted Giraffe, 500 U.S. 1, Vero Beach, according to the Sheriff's Office. She was wearing a black leather jacket, a blue-and-white striped shirt, black pants and gold high heels, carrying a black purse with a multi-colored polka dot scarf attached to it.

Tomassi lives in north St. Lucie, but has walked in the past to the Quilted Giraffe, which is north of Oslo Road in Indian River, deputies said.

As of late Saturday afternoon, Tomassi was still missing. The Sheriff's Office was using marine units, the Sheriff's helicopter and deputies on foot for the search.

Tomassi's "missing" poster had been posted at some businesses along U.S. 1 and Oslo.

On Friday, March 16, at approximately 5:00 PM, Assunta “Susy” Tomassi was outside of the Quilted Giraffe, the restaurant owned by her and her husband. Mrs. Tomassi is known to sit outside of the restaurant and read a book or smoke, which is where she told her husband she would be. She also frequently walks to the South Vero Square plaza where she is known to visit the Family Dollar store. Mrs. Tomassi has wandered off before, but her husband has always been able to locate her. At approximately 6:00 PM, he realized Susy was missing and began looking for her. Surveillance video obtained from Wildwood Antique Mall in South Vero Square shows Mrs. Tomassi walking in front of the business at 5:41 PM. The same surveillance video also shows her husband enter the store approximately forty minutes later searching for Susy.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY SHERIFF STATED, “BASED ON SURVEILLANCE VIDEO OBTAINED FROM BUSINESSES IN SOUTH VERO SQUARE, WE KNOW THAT AT 5:41 PM, MRS. TOMASSI WAS WALKING SOUTH THROUGH THE SOUTH VERO SQUARE PLAZA. WE ALSO BELIEVE THAT SHE DID NOT ENTER THE FAMILY DOLLAR STORE OR WALK PAST PUBLIX. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SHE MAY HAVE ACCEPTED A RIDE OR EXITED THE PLAZA ANOTHER WAY.”

It says she's wandered off before. Unfortunate. I've worked with people that have dementia for 8 yrs. At the time she was seen on video surveillance she most likely was sundowning. That causes confusion and agitation. I hope she's found safe soon.

[h=1]Group searches Oslo area for Quilted Giraffe restaurateur missing since Friday[/h]
INDIAN RIVER COUNTY— About 50 people convened outside The Quilted Giraffe Wednesday morning to organize what became an hours-long search for a St. Lucie County woman last seen five days ago at the restaurant she owns with her husband. The group combed through a thick wooded area across Oslo Road from the South Vero Square plaza and behind a car lot. The brush was damp from Tuesday's rain; puddles made the area seem more like a marsh.Still, the group of men and women of all ages crept through the thicket with little hesitation, eyes peeled for the slightest evidence of Assunta "Susy" Tomassi, who Indian River County Sheriff's Office officials said suffers from dementia.

Search for missing St. Lucie County woman turns to Brevard County

MELBOURNE — The search for a missing St. Lucie County woman turned its focus to Wickham Park Wednesday.

A detective from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office traveled to the park, which occupies 400 acres on the corner of Wickham Road and Parkway Drive. That area includes a camping area where some homeless congregate. And some told an investigator they have seen someone who looked like 73-year-old Susy Tomassi wandering in the park and others places in Melbourne in the company of the homeless.

A Silver Alert spans statewide for those missing in a vehicle, especially senior citizens with dementia.

The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office can only search a 1-mile radius to where the 911 call was made, per the current state law, because she took off on foot. The family started a petition to propose a change to the current law.

I truly hope and pray that no one has harmed her. I think about her on a regular basis. People that have dementia are important to me since I've taken care of them for many years. It's truly heartbreaking when a dementia patient feels lost and scared in their own mind due to that disease. They literally have no idea what is going on. 😢

My goodness- seems a very unusual state law! Glad to hear the family has started petition to change it.

Hmm, one of the Facebook posts regarding her is no longer there.
