Authorities ID victim in Bethlehem burning body case, call it a 'very violent type of homicide'

Investigators say the man whose burning body was found Tuesday outside a Bethlehem apartment complex was stabbed several times and set ablaze while still alive.

Authorities have ruled his killing a homicide and identified the man as Tyrell Michael Holmes, 18, of Bethlehem. During a news conference Wednesday afternoon, they said his attackers are still on the loose.

Northampton County Zachary Lysek said Holmes died of smoke inhalation, thermal injuries and “multiple stab wounds.”

[...]

“It is a very violent type of homicide,” DiLuzio said, adding that a dozen detectives and the forensic unit are working on the case.

District Attorney John Morganelli said the violent nature of the killing, what he called “torture,” makes it likely a first-degree homicide case.

He said a trained police dog detected accelerants in the grass near where police found the body

The pre-dawn gruesome discovery of a body ablaze brought officers to a sidewalk at Parkhurst Apartments on Barbara Street.

Witnesses told police they heard the man scream and crawl along the ground. An officer put out the flames with an extinguisher.

Witness Daniel Vaughn said he was watching television around 2:30 a.m. when he saw flames outside. When he went to investigate, he said he saw what he thought was a burning mannequin near a trash container.

“I don’t ever want to see something like that again,” Vaughn said.

Teen murder victim was stabbed, then burned alive in Bethlehem, DA says

"It is a very violent type of homicide," said Bethlehem police Chief Mark DiLuzio.

While authorities don't have a suspect, they have "a circle of individuals" who had contact with Holmes "that we have to take a very hard look at," Morganelli said.

DiLuzio said a dozen investigators are working on the case along with the Bethlehem police department forensic unit.

"We're really happy with the information that's been developed so far," Morganelli said.

The combination of stabbing and burning indicates the crime was premeditated, which means the killer or killers will be charged with first-degree murder, Morganelli said. The killer could face the death penalty since the victim was tortured, he said.

Holmes "was in extreme pain and was conscious leading up to his death," Morganelli said. "This is a very, very egregious crime. We offer our sympathies to the family members."

Holmes once attended Liberty High School but hadn't been enrolled there since 2015, according to Bethlehem Area School District Superintendent Joseph Roy.

Morganelli said the preliminary investigation leads him to believe the killing took place where Holmes was found. He said Holmes did not live in the apartments.

DiLuzio asked tipsters to call the Bethlehem police department at 610-865-7187 or to dial 911. Det. Blake Kuntz is handling the case.
