WHEELING — Police continue to investigate after a body was discovered late Sunday afternoon along the Ohio River at the southern tip of Wheeling Island.

A fisherman reported seeing the body at about 4:50 p.m. Sunday. Police responded, and members of the Wheeling Fire Department also came to the scene.

Assistant Fire Chief Paul Harto said the body was found over a tree branch in a decomposing state, and he described the body also as being “muddy.”
“It has been in water for a while,” Harto said.

“It has been in water for a while,” Harto said.

The body was placed on a boat and transported by river to nearby Wheeling Island Marina, where it was taken by van to the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for positive identification, according to Harto.

Officials at the scene did not reveal whether the deceased was male or female, nor did they give an approximate age.

Back in November 2017, the body of a woman was seen in the Ohio River at the Dashields Dam near Moon Twp, PA. A drone zoomed in on the body and a tattoo was clearly seen. Family members believe it was Shauntae Rose of Pittsburgh who had the same tattoo. Conditions at the time were too dangerous to retrieve the body. Last report was that officials had lost sight of the body. To my knowledge, Her body was never seen again and, therefore, not recovered. Given the amount of time - I wonder if this could be her.

That's horrible! Her poor family. I hope they are able to ID this body to give some family closure.

Patrick Rohal went missing from Pittsburgh in December 2017 and is believed to have gone in the river, he has never been found either.

MARTINS FERRY — West Virginia officials have identified the body found Sunday in the back channel of the Ohio River as a missing man from here.

The West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office said Joseph Herring, 37, of Martins Ferry, was the man pulled from the southern bank of Wheeling Island. He had been missing since Jan. 9. The office said it used dental records to make the identification.

The Wheeling Police Department released the information late Thursday afternoon. Philip Stahl, public information officer for the department, wrote in his release that the cause and manner of Herring’s death remained unknown. However, he said, there were no obvious signs of foul play.

Maybe I don’t understand body decomp while in water but isn’t 4 months a long time for a body to be in the water and it still be a “body”?

Ok well. Be careful googling information on fresh water body decomp. It’s quite gruesome.
