Pharmaceutical giant Barry Sherman and his wife Honey Sherman were found dead in a home in Toronto’s York Mills neighbourhood on Friday afternoon, sources confirm.

Emergency crews responded to a 9-1-1 medical call at a house located at 50 Old Colony Road, which is in the area of Bayview Avenue and Highway 401.
Firefighters, officers and paramedics arrived on scene just before 12 p.m. and located two bodies inside.
Barry Sherman was the chairman of generic drug company Apotex Inc. He and his wife were well known Toronto philanthropists.

Canadian Business magazine recently listed Barry Sherman as the 15th richest person in Canada, with a net worth of $4.77 billion.

Speaking to reporters in front of the home, Const. David Hopkinson said the victims’ deaths are being treated as suspicious at this time.

“The circumstances of their deaths appear suspicious and we are treating it that way,” he said. “Our investigators are inside (the home) investigating and taking apart the scene.”

Dr. Eric Hoskins, Ontario's Minister of Health and Long Term Care, tweeted: "I am beyond words right now. My dear friends Barry and Honey Sherman have been found dead. Wonderful human beings, incredible philanthropists, great leaders in health care. A very, very sad day. Barry, Honey, rest in peace."

Mr. Feldman said family members had told him that Mr. Sherman had not been at work on Thursday, and that no one had heard from his wife that day, either.
"We don't know what happened. A family member got information and called me. … We don't want to interfere with a police investigation, but on the other hand the kinfolk want to know about their kinfolk."
An Apotex spokesperson said they had just learned the news and would not be commenting immediately.

[h=1]WARMINGTON: Cousin cruelly claims Barry Sherman 'hated his wife' and wanted her 'whacked'[/h]
Family and friends close to slain Honey and Barry Sherman call a British tabloid’s suggestion the billionaire murdered his wife before killing himself “outrageous, false and disgusting.”

They were responding to an exclusive story in the Daily Mail that quotes a relative — who once tried to sue Barry Sherman for $1-billion — saying the Apotex founder had previously wanted his wife dead.
“Every word in the story is a depraved and cruel lie,” she said. “It’s despicable.”

Others close to the Shermans said the “bizarre, cheap and fictional” claims come out of a desire for “revenge” and “profit.”

“Barry loved Honey more than anything and any suggestion he didn’t, or would harm her, is pathetic,” one close friend said.

VICTIM FRIENDLY

Websleuths is a victim friendly forum. Attacking or bashing a victim is not allowed. Discussing victim behavior, good or bad is fine, but do so in a civil and constructive way, and only when such behavior is relevant to the case.

The "victim friendly" rule extends to the family members of victims and suspects. Sleuthing family members, friends, and others who have not been designated as suspects is not allowed. Don't make random accusations, suggest their involvement, nor bash and attack them. Posting their personal information, including names, addresses, and background data -- even if it is public -- is not allowed. That does not mean, however, that statements made by family members and other third parties cannot come into discussion as the facts of the case are reported in the media.

Please continue the discussion here and please stay on topic. Wild speculation and conspiracy theories violate Websleuths' Rules and TOS.

As far as the pool being cold, it takes forever to heat up a pool. I imagine Honey used it a lot. I imagine the pool room was warm. When things get cold, everything gets cold; the floor, the walls, the furniture. It takes a long time to heat up the room as well.

Mention has been made that Honey was estranged from the daughters. Where does that info come from?

I tried replying to this message, but the thread had just closed.

From JDG

might be O/T or not

It was 'interesting' that Hoskins was dismissed and the investigation involving BS and Trudeau dropped.
They could/should have continued to investigate the PMs part in it, IMO.

Its well known and there are many articles (google) about Canadians paying far too much for generic drugs and the fact that generic drugs are up to 20% lesser potency than the name brands.

Some people think this doesn't really matter, they work. Yes, they work for people who only need 80% potency but if you need 100% potency and get 80% and its a life threatening illness........oh well.

Lots of questions, lots and lots of questions.

I have posted before about the potency problems and costs to Canadians, but I totally agree that this case should be used to shine a light on many things.

No insult or disrespect to KW or those involved in pharmaceuticals.

People just don't always seem to be aware of potential problems. The alternative also can be that brand drugs are too expensive and THAT locks people out of medical care.

Not O/T at all. It is my opinion that there are players involved in this crime, one way or another, who are way over the pay scale and reach of LE. Be it multi billion dollar corporations or government. For that reason this may never be solved and we'll have to sort out the Internet conspiracy theories for the real answer.

If there was some big time conspiracy involving top govt people, wouldn’t they come up with a far better plan? Heck, kill them in Florida where there is plenty of crime. Shots from a rifle with a silencer. They can shoot from a long distance away.

This crime is so messy with possible contamination.

They could have killed Honey on the highway when she went golfing and got Barry later. Barry could have even killed himself out of grief ( murder to look, like suicide).

As this is a new thread, I thought I'd place this here for reference.

Homicide Det.-Sgt. Susan Gomes, TPS Press Conference, Friday, January 26th, 2018:

(My transcription- there may be typos.)

-At 11:44 am on Friday December the 15th, 2017, we responded to a 9-1-1 call to 50 Old Colony Road. Officers attended the address and located Barry Sherman and Honey Sherman, deceased.

-Post-mortem examinations were conducted at the Province's Coroner's Office: Forensic Pathology Unit, by a Forensic Pathologist. The cause of death for both Shermans was ligature neck compression.

-The manner was undetermined; with the only presented options being: double-suicide, homicide-suicide or double-homicide.

-From the outside of this investigation, we have followed the evidence and we were alive to the issue of an undetermined manner of death

-The integrity of every homicide investigation is paramount

-Facts guide our focus. Conjecture and speculation have no place

-Each of the three manners, the options provided to us, were all equally considered as evidence presented itself

-As a unit with the assistance of many other areas of expertise within our service, we have so far spent thousand of hours on this investigation.

-Our partners include the Province's Coroners office, forensic pathology unit and many areas of discipline within the Centre of Forensic Sciences

-We are in the process of attaining or have executed 20 judicial authorizations and searches.

-Legal complexities and some executions have been challenging given the litigious nature of Barry Sherman's businesses. In particular the search and seizure of electronics in BS's work space at Apotex

-Two residential properties belonging to the Shermans have been searched. The primary Sherman residence is a 3-story family dwelling, of a size warranting six weeks of searching, forensic review and seizing of evidence

-This morning, we returned the residence to the family.

-To date close to 150 bulk or packaged items have been seized and are currently being reviewed and forensically analysed

-A total of 127 witness statements have been compiled; this number continues to grow each day.

-Neighbourhood canvases have occurred in the area surrounding the Sherman residence. This includes the collection of 4TB of security video from both commercial and residential property. There are approximately 500 hours in each of these TB.

-And finally, 348 investigative actions have been assigned and are being vigorously pursued.

-Contact with the immediate Sherman family has been consistent and ongoing. For them it has been difficult to balance their patience with their frustration, with us and our investigation, not unlike any other family who has suffered such a sudden and profound loss. They have been understanding, cooperative and hopeful that this investigation can give them some answers.

-What we have come to learn so far in our investigation that I'm willing to confirm with you today, is that Honey and Barry Sherman were last seen alive in the evening hours of Wednesday, December 13th, 2017.

-Neither of the two had communicated with friends, family or associates from that time frame until their discovery on Friday, December the 15th.

-There are no signs of forced entry on all access points to the home.

-Honey and Barry Sherman were found deceased in the lower level pool area, hanging by belts from a poolside railing in a semi-seated position on the pool deck. They were wearing their clothing.

-We believe now, through the six week work review, we have sufficient evidence to describe this as a double-homicide investigation. And that both Honey and Barry Sherman were, in fact, targeted.

-We will continue to focus exclusively on evidence with whatever resources are necessary.

-We ask anyone to come forward with anything they may think is valuable to the investigation. And we, along with the family, are grateful to those who have done so thus far.

(Reporter questions and answers follow.)

Susan’s lips are moving and she’s reading from a script....only one problem: she’s a terrible liar.
After watching this several times, l’m totally convinced she not truthful.

With respect, if you are referring to my post as a conspiracy, its not. Everything posted is FACTUAL except my opinion that the investigation should have continued.

I do think this double 'targeted' murder has more to it than wanting the Shermans' dead.

All the dramatic staging of the bodies must have been a message to others or a warning of some sort.

It was beyond, way beyond the average murder. As you point out, they could have been shot away from their home, in a shooting, car accident, whatever. Even shot (with a silencer) in their home, two bodies and walk away. The staging adds something very sinister IMO

As for who or why? I also feel this may never be solved as the financial dealings, personal involvement with people in both high and low places makes it too complex to be able to prosecute.

[h=1]Barry Sherman’s death cuts short the lobbying probe against him[/h][h=2]The democracy watchdog group that complained about Sherman’s activities promises to challenge the decision in court[/h] by Michael Friscolanti and Anne Kingston Jan 25, 2018
The chairman of Canada’s largest pharmaceutical firm, Sherman was the target of Ottawa’s lobbying watchdog in the months before he and his wife, Honey, were discovered dead inside their Toronto mansion on Dec. 15. At the heart of the investigation was an exclusive Liberal party fundraiser Sherman hosted at his home in August 2015—featuring soon-to-be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as guest of honour—and whether that event breached the Lobbyists’ Code of Conduct.

A registered lobbyist (which Sherman was at the time, as chair of Apotex) is prohibited from placing elected officials in a potential conflict of interest that could make them feel “a sense of obligation.”

Last May, Sherman and his company responded to the investigation with a Federal Court challenge, hoping to quash the commissioner’s “unanchored fishing expedition” before it even finished. The case marked a first: never had someone gone to court to try to derail an active probe by the lobbying commissioner.
In light of Dr. Sherman’s passing, the purpose of the investigation to ensure his compliance with the Code can no longer be fulfilled.”

“Accordingly, I decided to cease the investigation,” she continues.

Duff Conacher, co-founder of Democracy Watch, says the investigation must continue because the case goes much deeper than Sherman himself
Toronto police continue to investigate the Shermans’ deaths, which they’ve termed “suspicious,” but detectives have revealed few other details.

IMHO, these TWO articles are important, by one of the best investigative reporters.
Pay close attention to the dates.

Perhaps someone that has some free time, can make a TIMELINE of EVENTS combining both articles, including dates of search warrants, production orders, judicial authorizations, etc., and other news articles, including date of the so-called "unauthorized leak" from someone within the team of hired lawyers/PIs, etc.
With a Timeline of Events, it will be much easier to comprehend how things unfolded. It will paint a much clear picture. JMHO
To be a fly on the wall during that Monday, January 22nd, 2018 interview!

Title: Sherman investigation initially focused only on Barry’s wife Honey as a murder victim

Search warrant documents obtained by the Star shed light on the early weeks of the police probe into the deaths of the billionaire couple.
The Toronto police were investigating the murder of just Honey Sherman — not Barry and Honey — for almost a full month after the couple’s strangled bodies were found in their home, search warrant documents reveal.
These search warrant documents show that in the early days of the probe police appear to have believed only Honey was a victim of murder and that theory continued until at least Jan. 10, 2018.
Despite the visible evidence at the crime scene, documents filed in support of the first search warrants and production orders show that police believed that Honey Sherman alone was the victim of a crime.
On Dec. 20, 2017, five days after the bodies were discovered, Toronto police first sought a search warrant and two “production orders,” stating that “Honey Sherman was the victim of a Murder Section 235 (1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.” Barry Sherman’s name is not mentioned
Police had attended the first autopsy on the Shermans, which was carried out Dec. 16 by a provincial pathologist.

A second autopsy, conducted by a retired senior pathologist hired by the family, was done Dec. 20, the day before the funeral and the same day as the first series of judicial authorizations were granted by a judge.
IMPORTANT Sources have told the Star that police did not talk to Chiasson until later in January after the Star reported Chiasson’s conclusion that it was a double murder — not murder-suicide.

The next series of warrants — four in total — were granted by a judge on Jan. 10. A document filed with the warrant, describing the investigation, reveals that police still considered the murder victim to be Honey Sherman, not Barry and Honey Sherman.
On Jan. 15, seven more judicial authorizations were granted, two warrants, seven production orders. In this case, the warrants state that “unknown person (s)” did “commit the offence of murder.”

Title: How the investigation into the deaths of Barry and Honey Sherman turned from murder-suicide to double homicide
Police documents filed in court in support of search warrants show that in the first month of the investigation, police provided information to Justice Leslie Pringle stating that Honey was the only victim at 50 Old Colony Rd. When police file information to obtain a search warrant (Pringle has issued all of the warrants in this case) they must list the offences they are pursuing. Between the discovery of the bodies and mid January, the only offence was the murder of Honey.

Saturday, the day after the bodies were discovered, autopsies were conducted at the Office of the Chief Coroner in north Toronto. Pathologist Dr. Michael Pickup, a staff pathologist at the provincial forensic pathologist unit in Toronto, did both autopsies. Police were present at the autopsies.[/B]

[What sources? We need to be careful with unknown sources.] Sources say Pickup saw indications that it might be a case of double murder. However, Pickup did not make that ruling. Neither Pickup or his boss, chief forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Pollanen, would discuss the case with the Star, citing provincial privacy rules.

Toronto Police will only say that until late January, they considered all options, including murder suicide, double suicide and double murder. Police will not shed light on the conversations between Dr. Pickup and the Toronto Police investigators in the autopsy room regarding the first autopsies.

The funeral for the Sherman couple was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 21. Chiasson and others on Greenspan’s team had to move fast. They sought and received permission from the coroner’s office to conduct private autopsies before the scheduled funeral. It is unusual for a family to conduct their own autopsy, but not unprecedented.

On Wednesday, Dec. 20, Chiasson entered the pathology suite at the modern coroner’s office.

The photos showed markings made by some type of rope or plastic tie that had encircled both Barry and Honey’s wrists and damaged the skin. The deduction Chiasson and the private detectives made was that their wrists had been bound prior to death. From the photos they could not determine if the hands were bound in front, or behind their backs. As to the biopsy that would determine the age of the skin abrasions on the wrists, the Star could not get answers.

Read this paragraphs carefully -- Take special notice of WHO the sources are In Chiasson’s examination, it was determined that they were likely not strangled with the belts. Instead, they were strangled with some other type of ligature, and the belts were then put around their necks.

Sources have told the Star that while one belt appears to be Barry Sherman’s (he was not wearing a belt when found) it is not known where the other belt came from.

“Photographs of both the scene and the autopsy, certain things struck all of them collectively and lead them to the conclusion that it was a double homicide,” said a source close to the private investigation.

That conclusion was made on Dec. 20, the day before the funeral. [Note, this "conclusion" is obviously the hired ME or PI's because we know the offical ME didn't ruled that out in December, and we know the TPS considered HS to be the ONLY victim way into January (January 26th iirc).

On Friday, Jan. 19, the Toronto Star published an investigative report revealing that the private investigation team, including Dr. Chiasson, had concluded it was a case of double murder.

The following Monday, [January 22] the Toronto police homicide squad interviewed Dr. Chiasson.

That Friday, Jan. 26, at a well-attended press conference at police headquarters, Homicide Det. Sgt. Susan Gomes announced that after closely investigating three theories of the death, police had ruled it a double homicide.

The next batch of search warrants and production orders filed by police, on Feb. 15, listed both Barry and Honey as victims of homicide.

This might sound trite but did BS usually wear a belt? Most men do when in business attire.

I wonder if Barrys belt was around his neck or around Honeys neck?

When I read these articles, it didn't surprise me that the search warrants were in HS name only as the unnamed source from TPS had stated it to be a M/S. I figured that because they had warrants and access to the home, so much work to do, etc., they just didn't bother to go back and add Barrys name to all of the paperwork.

Words and phrases such as 'appear to believe' and 'sources' have to be front and centre in our minds, IMO, as the journalists job is to sell newspapers. They are not necessarily arbiters of the truth.

IF during the first autopsy, they found signs of a double murder why not report it as such?

Quoting Hazel, Thats a hard pill to swallow. ;)

How would one go looking for lists of search warrants and other similar documents?

It seems very odd that the police didn't speak to the second pathologist until a month after the autopsies.

Will we ever know how this all truly unfolded?

Sorry for the VERY lengthy post above :blushing:

Took me some time, so I hope it doesn't get deleted :please:

Quotes are from two news articles, and supported by links, so IMHO should not get deleted.

Message to Miele: Thank you for your great insights; luckily I had the chance to read your post. *wink*

Hopefully truth will prevail.

Is this a "first" on WS? We have a Verified Insider who is related to the victims, freely states that he hated both of them, and says he has been told that he is the prime suspect in their murders.

Not sure but it may be.

Barry was said to more of a loner, introvert and Honey the outgoing one. Maybe Honey is the one that planned that political dinner, and got Barry in hot water. Maybe he didn't even want it, plan it, etc. There could be motive there. Barry was under investigation, was Honey? With prior legal issues, it usually involved the business. It appears the majority of the time, Barry's legal team was able to win the cases. This time is different though. It involved politics more than just a business decision. Could there have been jail time? Heavy charges? I don't know. Just my thoughts at this time.

The Shermans didn't lack enemies. We don't often see cases with so many possible motives, suspects, etc. I don't think the Winter children are involved in the killings. I'm still not convinced there was two murders. I don't have enough information to say one way or another. Yet even if both were murdered, and if it was one or more of the Winter children, then this case would be solved by now, IMO. Instead of murder for all these years, they fought it in court.

If cameras in the home, and the neighborhood show a vehicle at their home, unknown people approaching the home, or in the home, I may think differently. Until then, I don't know how any of us could figure out the suspect or suspects if any does exist. We have a long list of motives, but what evidence do we have to tie anyone to a crime?
