April 2, 2006 -- An off-duty New York City correction officer shot and killed one of two men who broke into his car in the driveway of his Long Island home early yesterday morning.

Ricardo Walters, 41, of Hempstead, awoke at 1:30 a.m. to the sound of his car alarm.

Nassau County cops said the married father of three peered out of his bedroom window and saw two men rummaging through his 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, trying to steal his radio.

The thieves realized they had been spotted and immediately began to flee on foot across Walters' front lawn. Walters ran out to confront them and they fired a shot at him.

He returned fire three times and struck one of the men in the head. The victim was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where he died at 2:30 a.m. His accomplice escaped.
