COLUMBUS, Ohio -- An Ohio State University student reported missing by his family told police in Tennessee he had freed himself from abductors, but later admitted that his story was a lie, authorities said.
Hiroshi Hayashi, 21, of suburban Grove City, was jailed Tuesday in Athens, Tenn., on a charge of filing a false report, said Rick Amweg, assistant chief of the OSU police.
Hayashi told Athens police that he had been taken by force from the OSU campus Thursday and driven to Tennessee, where he managed to escape, Amweg said.
But investigators found inconsistencies in his story, and Hayashi confessed to making it up, Amweg said.
Ohio State police detectives plan to talk to Hayashi to determine how he got to a Tennessee town that's 400 miles south of Columbus and what happened to him during the five days he was missing.
He hadn't used his credit cards or checked his e-mail since Thursday, Amweg said, and police found his car in an Ohio State parking lot.
"We have no indication at all as to why this may have occurred," Amweg said.
Hayashi's relatives also planned to travel to Tennessee to speak with him, Amweg said. His disappearance prompted family members to issue tearful, public pleas for help finding him.
Gary Kidder, an FBI special agent in Knoxville, confirmed Hayashi changed his story when talking to agents. But Kidder did not have details about the student's statement, including the reason why he first reported being kidnapped.
A junior majoring in computer information science, Hayashi appeared distraught when he walked into the Athens police station wearing the same clothes -- jeans, shirt and wind breaker -- that he was reported to be wearing when he disappeared, officers said.
He was examined at a hospital but didn't appear to be injured.
