WASHINGTON (AP) -- Demonstrators would be barred from disrupting military funerals at national cemeteries under legislation approved by Congress and sent to the White House.

The measure, passed by voice vote in the House Wednesday hours after the Senate passed an amended version, specifically targets a Kansas church group that has staged protests at military funerals around the country, claiming that the deaths were a sign of God's anger at U.S. tolerance of homosexuals.

The act "will protect the sanctity of all 122 of our national cemeteries as shrines to their gallant dead," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tennessee, said prior to the Senate vote.

Families have the right to mourn the loss of their loved one
without those idiots around.

Protesters should be in front of congress or the white house
not bothering so innocent soilders family.
 
It's about d*mned time!:furious: People that try to further their agenda at the expense of a fallen soldier's family's tragedy & grief just really make me furious! It should have been banned years ago, imo!
 
Shouldn't just be at military funerals - it should be at all of them. Whatever the issues in life, a funeral should be able to be private and about the grief of the friends and family - whether burying Hitler, Mother Theresa, Terri Schiavo, a cop, a soldier, whatever.

I agree, but they're not protesting those funerals. They're choosing to protest the funerals of American heros who died for this country. I think the way this country treats its vets is appauling, but allowing these lunatics to protest their funerals is beyond belief.

Great post DETAILS. I am saddened and shocked that any person with half a brain would think that protesting at a funeral would be appropriate or effective.

They are heartless fools. Someone should escort them to the nearest jail IMO.

States are working on it!!

In response to the demonstrations, the Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group including many veterans, has begun appearing at military funerals to pay respects to the fallen service member and protect the family from disruptions.

More than a dozen states are considering similar laws to restrict protests at nonfederal cemeteries. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit against a new Kentucky law, saying it goes too far in limiting freedom of speech and expression.

Maybe I need to write my senators and gov, I keep seeing all these vote for me ads, give em something to talk about or add to their resumes.
 
Am I the only one who finds it ironic that we're considering banning someones right to protest over a fallen soldiers grave. The same soldiers that fought and died to give them the right to protest?

I totally agree that anyone who prostests at any funeral is a huge jacka$$ and doesn't have an ounce of compassion however the jacka$$'s get their rights too. (to bad we can't move them all to their own state and let them torment each other)

The morons will still have the right to protest. They'll just have to do it from a little further away.
 
There's a point at which some peoples' free speech infringes upon other peoples' basic rights. (To give a speech; to be buried in peace).

Who's rights should come first? Surely someone being buried and their family members.

Personally, I think the rights of the men and women ready to lay down their lives to protect those rights should come first. My father in law is burred in Arlington National Cemetary and my brother in law and sister in law will most likely be burried in federal cemetaries, both being retired Army. I cannot imagine my husband and his family having to deal with protestors.

The right to free speech doesn't mean anywhere. You have a right to be heard, but try giving your free speech at 3am through a loudspeaker in a quiet neighborhood, or asserting free speech lets you go into the neighbors house to talk to them without their permission, etc. There are limits on free speech - you have every right to say what you want, but not wherever you want.

And you don't have the guarenteed right to be agrred with, which a lot of people seem to not understand. They not only want the right to free specch, but the right not to be argued/taken to task for what they say as well.
 
My grandmother told me that my rights ended when they infringed upon the rights of others. She was a very wise lady. :)
