NEW YORK Another passenger has gone missing from a Caribbean cruise ship.

Carnival Cruise Lines says its Carnival Legend vessel was en route from the British Virgin Islands to New York when one passenger reported seeing another jump overboard.

The ship was diverted for 12 hours while a search took place.

The Coast Guard sent a C-130 airplane crew to help look for the missing guest. Carnival says after 12 hours without finding the guest, the Coast Guard sent the cruise ship on its way to New York, where it docked this evening.

These Cruise Lines have got to extend the height of their railings. They should be tall enough so that no one could fall or jump over them. And so that no one could throw a person overboard.

If each Cruise Lines just took the time to extend the height of the railings it wouldn't cost that much and they could even do it while the ships are traveling. It probably wouldn't take that long to extend the rails. The solution seems so simple to me. Good grief, how many people does this make now????

My Sister is just back from one of these cruises , and she said it has nothing to do with the height of the guard rail's , she was disgusted to see the Drunk's on board trying to balance and walk along the rail's , She said they are realy only putting other people's life at risk . Drunk on board from morning till night .Party Party Party , at all cost's.

It's inconceivable to me, that in this day and age, and not say during the 30s/40s/50s/60s ...... when the dangers & health risks of abusing alcohol are so well known, that an entire tourism industry has sprung up which apparently simply caters to alcohol addiction.

I simply was amazed to learn that so many vacationers from America want to drink 24/7 - what a waste of a beautiful sea voyage.

I would never go on a cruise anywhere, not ever, now that I've seen again and again and again on the news that the ship is simply a floating casino filled with drunks, and who knows what all else unsavory activities.

YMMV.

I think its important to not blame the cruise ships or the tourism industry.

First off People need to be responsible for their own actions.
Secondly if the cruise ships did not "cator" to it other places would.
Sandals resorts offers a vacation package that includes unlimited drinks included.
Casino's bring free drinks to all activily playing. The tourism industry cannot be blamed for supply and demand.

While I feel great empathy for the family of the person missing from this cruise ship, I don't think there's much you can do about someone who wants to JUMP OFF a cruise ship. If they want to bad enough, they'll find a way. I'm more concerned about the ones who disappear that didn't jump off but were probably pushed off.

Must be this man was angry and just wanted to end it. How sad for his child, wife and extended family. I hope his child wasn't on the ship.

Argument May Have Preceded Cruise Ship Jump

Snip:

Passengers said they were told a father of a young child had argued with his wife in his cabin before jumping over a balcony. They said a call of "Bravo, bravo," used to alert crew members to a serious incident, was heard over the ship's announcement system. (More at link)

Well Bravo he didn't take the wife and child with him!

We do not know if this person jumped on their own free will.Just because a witness claims that they saw a person jump means nothing. What if they caused the persons death and said that to divert a crime.
Just because it was said that there was a supposed arguement???Who claims that he wanted to "end it".

redeskimo,
Do you have a link stating that this person was drunk. This post implies that the victim was drunk.

Dark Shadow read the post again please , I'm not talking about this victim , I'm talking about cruise passangers in general . Not all cruise passangers , but it seems to be the done thing to go and get drunk 24/7 while on board.

YMMV.

We've been on two cruises and have never experienced any drunks anywhere. We did experience people drinking and having a good time out by the pools, but all within reason.

I don't think the 'floating casino filled with drunks' is an accurate assessment. I know many people who cruise several times a year and don't experience this either.

That said, I do agree that the railings could be such that no one would be able to go over them. The two we have been on have had a clear plexi-glass type bottom with a wood railing on top. I don't see why they couldn't extend the plexi-glass stuff up to say 6 foot or something - you can see through it so it wouldn't block views, but yet keep everyone safe. That would be ideal.

I agree with you, Jules. I have been on 4 cruises and have not seen a ship overloaded with drunks. Everything seems to be under control.

The railings on the ships I have been on are already high and I think it would be difficult for one person alone to throw anyone off....but your idea of 6 feet with plexiglass sounds good, or maybe it would be a good idea to put strong netting above the railings they already have.

If someone really wants to jump, they will do it. This is sad for the wife and children in this case.

Just my :twocents: worth but I think that the destination and the cruise line have a fair amount to do with the number of partiers and drinkers. Some cruise lines "cater to" the older crowd and some destinations...the fun and sun ones.... are bound to attract the younger party crowd.

Apparently after reading the full story:

Husband and wife having a "disagreement" regarding how much money he has spent on a bar bill and of course how much he has paid for and drank. This was in front of their two children.

He then to end the "disagreement" he leaves the ship by jumping overboard.

The wife and children were horrified and shocked.

No foul play is suspected, of course in my opinion alcohol was a factor in his "eratic" behavior and decision to "jump ship".

No body has been found to date.

Wife is still in shock.

Kids I am sure are distraught.

Sad all around for everyone.

This is really sad. However, I don't think "enclosing" the ship with higher rails is the answer. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. He could have just as easily flung himself off the balcony of a hotel (like the guy in South Beach).

Yes, then comes the "lawsuit lottery." No one takes responsibility for their actions these days...it's always someone elses fault.

I caught the end of a story last night on the news...something about someone suing McDonald's (or some fast-food joint) because the greasy fries made them sick! This may not be completely accurate because I only heard part of it...but is this crazy, or what??
