Family mourns after Colorado teen found dead in Florida

AURORA - Eighteen year old Shantay Huntington wanted to travel and find a place to settle down with her boyfriend. But just one month after she left her home in Aurora, she was dead.
Shantay's body was found about a week and a half ago in the town of Loxahatchee, in Palm Beach County, Florida. She was wrapped in a blue sheet.

Shantay's mother Margaret Leyba says she was very close with her always smiling 18-year-old. So when in late April Shantay came to tell her she wanted to travel and was leaving with her boyfriend, Margaret says she tried to talk her out of it.

"Cause she was so young you know," said Leyba. "She was like, I'll be okay Mom. This is what I want to do."

That was the last time Leyba saw her daughter alive. Less than a month later, on May 23, Shantay's boyfriend called, saying she was missing.

She's so young. So heartbreaking for her family. Kids want to get out there and see the world having no idea the evil that is there. They are just to darn trusting and really believe that they can take care of themselves and nothing will happen to them.

I would really like to hear the rest of the story. What was going on before she went missing? Were her and her boyfriend getting along? Was she working? Does LE suspect the boyfriend or is he in the clear? So many questions. I hope that LE catches whoever did this. I know that her family is just going through hell. My prayers are with them.

AAH! I live in Loxahatchee! Too bad the only time we're in the news is when people dump bodies out here. I heard about this when it happened, but I hadn't heard about the identification. Glad she's been identified, but my heart goes out to her and her family.

From April 2010:

When Guillermo Romero, 28, of Opa-locka was arrested in October on an unrelated traffic charge, a routine run on a national DNA database linked him to the May 2006 slaying of the 18-year-old, whose body was found in Loxahatchee...

On Thursday night, a joint U.S. Marshal-Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office task force arrested Romero at his home. He's charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond... Romero has denied knowing Huntington, but the man's former wife, who split with him around the time of Huntington's murder, has said he frequented escort services that advertised in the back pages of South Florida newspapers.

And Shantay Huntington ran such ads.

According to Florida DOC records, Romero was sentenced to a little over three years for manslaughter:
