DEBARY -- A 15-year-old boy saved his older brother's life after a diving accident Wednesday. The 17-year-old was free diving in Blue Spring State Park in DeBary when he stopped breathing after he took in a lung full of carbon dioxide.
The accident couldn't have happened in a more remote part of the park. It was all the way back, about a quarter-mile into the woods at the mouth of the spring. That's where the 17-year-old came out of the water and keeled over.
Wes was swimming with his brother right into the mouth of the spring. He said his brother saw a pocket of air trapped under a ledge in the spring and he tried to steal another breath.
Unfortunately, the air was from scuba divers swimming below. It was their exhale, meaning it was mostly carbon dioxide.
