The man who allegedly brutally raped and murdered Sue White 19 years ago faced murder charges Thursday in a San Bernardino County courtroom while news of his capture spread quickly among her family members.
White, a Clifton resident, was 32 when she apparently tried to hitch a ride with a California trucker after getting into a fight with her boyfriend in Barstow, Calif. It was June 1987, and she and her boyfriend, Michael Miller, had spent the winter in California, where she worked planting trees, and he was a helicopter mechanic, according to her family.
On their way back to Grand Junction, they stopped for gas in Barstow and fought over who would pay for it. She then took off on foot, telling her boyfriend shed find her own way home and shed see him back in Colorado, her family said.
Thats the last time Miller or anyone White knew saw her alive.
Whites body was found June 25, 1987, off the Interstate 15 exit ramp near Nipton Road at the edge of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County.
She had been raped and stabbed multiple times, San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.
Authorities took a DNA sample from her body and froze it. They investigated at the time, but their leads went nowhere.
