(AP) JAKARTA, Indonesia A magnitude-7.7 earthquake triggered a 6-foot-high tsunami that crashed into beach resorts and fishing villages along Indonesia's Java island Monday, killing at least 47 people, leaving scores missing and sending thousands fleeing to higher ground in terror, witnesses and officials said.

Regional agencies issued bulletins that an undersea earthquake was strong enough to send a killer waive hurtling toward Indonesia, the country worst hit by the 2004 tsunami. But the alerts did not reach the victims, because the island has no warning system.

The hardest-hit area appeared to be Pangandaran, an idyllic beach resort long popular with local and foreign tourists, where witnesses said people shouted "tsunami, tsunami," and climbed trees or crowded inland mosques as the wave approached.

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A major earthquake off the coast of Java and a tsunami that followed has killed at least 86 people, but the death toll is expected to rise as the search for victims moves ahead, witnesses and officials told The Associated Press.

But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said Monday there did not appear to be a widespread tsunami threat in the region.

The center's Web site reported that "sea level gauge data indicate that a tsunami was generated" but it added that "based on historical earthquake and tsunami data, plus current sea level readings, a more widespread tsunami threat probably does not exist."

Local parliament member Rudi Supriatna Bahro in Ciamis, West Java, appeared on Metro TV Monday saying searchers had recovered 37 bodies but their efforts have been slowed by debris-strewn roads and damaged buildings. (Watch why there's still no tsunami warning system -- 3:18)
