Authorities said they are now fairly certain that 14 of the 50 unidentified women are alive, based on the tips they received after the photos were released. Detectives have set up a command center at the department's homicide squad in City of Commerce to cull through the tips and create a database.

California suspect talked to reporter about wanting to die

Thursday, July 27, 2006; Posted: 12:37 a.m. EDT (04:37 GMT) (CNN) -- The way his prosecutor recalls it, William Richard Bradford literally scared jurors into giving him the death penalty 18 years ago.

"He was the scariest defendant I ever prosecuted," said David Conn, a Los Angeles lawyer who won Bradford's conviction for the 1984 murders of a young woman and a 15-year-old neighbor.

"We knew all along there were more" victims, added Conn. "It was one case I knew I couldn't afford to lose. I had to convict this guy or he'd go out and kill more people." more at link:http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/07/26/bradford.interview/index.html

Investigators told The Los Angeles Times Wednesday evening that the first round of leads helped tentatively confirm that 24 of the women are still alive. Police also identified one woman as a murder victim.

Then the tips started flooding in -- more than 1,000 in the 24 hours after they sought the public's help Tuesday in identifying the women.

One woman called to say she was the person in photos 16 and 17-- and is very much alive.

Then Bradford's own daughter called in, saying that photo 48 was of his ex-wife and that she, too, is alive.

Though the department released only head shots, Peavy said some of the full photos had "pornographic" content.

More Than 1,000 Tips Received in Case of Missing Women

Peavy said some of the women are from Southern California but others might be from Michigan, Florida, Texas, Oregon, Illinois, Kansas or Louisiana. Bradford was arrested in 1978 in Michigan for sexually assaulting his wife. Two years later, he was accused of sexual assault in Valparaiso, Fla.

Meanwhile, other local law enforcement agencies are also looking into possible connections to other homicide cases from 1975 and 1982.

In the first, the Santa Monica Police Department was investigating whether Bradford was involved in the slaying of Patricia Dulong, 33, last seen in Santa Monica. And the Los Angeles Police Department may have linked him to the death of 23-year-old Mischa Stewart, Peavy said.

The case could lead outside California. Through the years, Bradford has spent time in Illinois, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Oregon and elsewhere.

"We could have victims theoretically all over the country," Peavy said.

Twenty-six of those women were believed to be alive, sheriff's homicide Capt. Ray Peavy said. He said the other two are believed to be a homicide victim and a 15-year-old girl who has been missing for years, but no additional details were immediately available.

Female reporter talks about the scary, creepy interview she had with Bradford.
Of the two victims found, Miller's body was found first. Flesh had been removed from calf and abdomen. Bradford was awaiting trial on a rape charge, and came to the authorities attention when the 15 year old neighbor went missing. Then LE found Miller's picture in Bradford's home. A detective noticed that Miller's tattoo's corresponded with where Jane Doe 60's flesh had been removed. They ID'ed her by dentals. They noted that Miller's picture was taken near a seal shaped rock and detectives hunted the desert for it. When they found the rock, they also found Campbell's body. It was covered with a blouse id'ed as Miller's.

By Thursday afternoon, investigators had tentatively identified a total of 31 of the women, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. Twenty-eight were believed to be alive while three were suspected to be homicide victims, including a 31-year-old mother of two whose decapitated body was found in a canyon in 1978.

No details of the other two suspected homicides were released.

Family members told deputies they recognized two faces among some 50 photographs released to the public this week. One woman was found strangled and dumped in a desolate area in Los Angeles County in 1980, and the other -- a 14-year-old girl -- ran away from her family in 1975 and was never heard from again, sheriff's Capt. Ray Peavy said........

One photograph depicted Donnalee Duhamel, a 31-year-old El Segundo woman found sexually assaulted and decapitated in Malibu in 1978.........

So far, detectives have received calls and e-mails that tentatively identify 30 more women.

"Twenty-eight of the women appear to be alive," Peavy said.......

Two calls sent shudders through the homicide bureau.

Children of a woman found killed in 1980 said one of the women looked like their mother, Peavy said.

One of the women photographed -- No. 33 -- bears a "strong resemblance" to Darlene Webb.

Fran Webb, the missing woman's mother who lives in Ormond Beach, stared at a Seabreeze High School graduation picture of her daughter Thursday and compared it to one of the photographs that Bradford snapped years ago of a young woman with similar features.

"There's a strong resemblance, but I don't know for sure," Fran Webb said as she sat on the front steps of her home.

The photographs were also sent to forensic artist J. Michael Deal, deputy chief of the Altamonte Springs Police Department. Deal has been a forensic artist for more than 20 years.

Investigators in Los Angeles County have said that Bradford, now 60, visited Florida in 1980, but they're not certain whether he was here when Webb disappeared in January 1983. He was back in California, however, by February 1983, according to police records.

Friday, as she has done in years past, Fran Webb bought a small cake and sang "Happy Birthday" to her youngest daughter.

"We do this every year," she said. "As far as I'm concerned, she's still alive and she's out there somewhere."

Through his attorney Friday, death row inmate William Richard Bradford offered to help investigators trying to locate 50 girls and women they say he photographed decades ago -- including three they believe were killed.

Since then, investigators have received more than 2,000 telephone calls and e-mails from as far away as Germany, and with their help have tentatively identified 34 of the 50 women portrayed, Los Angeles County sheriff's homicide Capt. Ray Peavy said Friday.

Three of the women could be victims of unsolved murders, Peavy said. One may be a 41-year-old mother whose headless body was found in a remote county area around 1980, and another may be a 14-year-old girl who vanished and was found in a "desolate" area in 1979. Both apparently were raped and strangled, Peavy said.

A third photograph appears to be that of a 14-year-old girl who vanished in 1975 after running away from her home in the Midwest and telling friends she was going to California. Peavy declined to provide other details but news reports say she may have been from Iowa.
