ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE LESSER ANTILLES...

AT 1100 PM AST...0300Z...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION FIVE WAS
LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 13.2 NORTH...LONGITUDE 63.9 WEST OR ABOUT 390
MILES...625 KM...SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO.

THE DEPRESSION IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 18 MPH...AND A WEST TO
WEST-NORTHWESTWARD MOTION...WITH SOME DECREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS
EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 35 MPH...55 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. SOME STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST AND THE DEPRESSION COULD
BECOME A TROPICAL STORM ON FRIDAY.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1007 MB...29.74 INCHES.

ALTHOUGH THE CENTER OF THE DEPRESSION CONTINUES TO MOVE AWAY FROM
THE WINDWARD ISLANDS...RAIN BANDS TRAILING THE CENTER WILL BE
AFFECTING THE ISLANDS OVERNIGHT...WITH HEAVY RAINS AND WIND GUSTS
TO TROPICAL STORM FORCE IN SQUALLS. ALL INTERESTS IN THE WINDWARD
ISLANDS...AS WELL AS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO...SHOULD EXERCISE
CAUTION UNTIL WINDS AND SEAS SUBSIDE.

RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED IN
ASSOCIATION WITH THE DEPRESSION.

REPEATING THE 1100 PM AST POSITION...13.2 N...63.9 W. MOVEMENT
TOWARD...WEST NEAR 18 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...35 MPH.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...1007 MB.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the depression that formed Thursday had maximum sustained winds near 35 mph, below tropical storm strength of 39 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported. It could become Tropical Storm Ernesto later Friday.


"It's starting to have some of the signs of a tropical storm," said Eric Blake, hurricane specialist. "We have it passing pretty close to Jamaica in a couple of days and slowly intensifying. It could be a hurricane in the northwest Caribbean Sea."


The depression was centered about 340 miles south of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Forecasters said it was moving west at about 15 mph
 
I actually hope one will head this way; not a bad one but enough to bring badly needed rain.
 
(State College, PA) - Tropical Depression 5 is still gaining strength, and could develop into Tropical Storm Ernesto sometime today. The AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is forecasting that by early next week TD-5 could potentially develop into a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical Storm Ernesto now in Caribbean

Tropical Storm Ernesto formed Friday over the Caribbean as it moved toward Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Ernesto, which posed no immediate threat to land, could develop next week into the first hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic season, the center said.

The outer edges of the storm were expected to bring rain to Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti over the next 24 hours.

I hope this thing dies down...and goes away!!!

We were in Grand Cayman this past January, and they've done a great job at cleaning up the George Town area (where the touristy things are and the ships anchor), but you wouldn't believe how damaged the other part of the island is. Over near Bodden Town, there are there huge homes that are just shells. And Lord knows, everyone in the Gulf area is sick of hurricanes.... :(
 
Ernesto is expected to be a 120 mph major storm by Wed--Once it gets in the Gulf,somebody is going to get it--either us or even mexico--A Gulf hurricane has never weakened back down to a tropical storm in recorded history,the Gulf waters being so warm--lets just hope that the strength forecast is wrong,and that it doesn't become any stronger than a minimal hurricane---Hurricane experts admit,that while their computer model track records are good,their forecasts on how strong a storm will become, leave much to be desired
 
Just on MSNBC: if the storm hits New Orleans as a Cat-3, the levees may not hold, according to the Army Corps of Engineers...and it may hit on or around the 1-year anniversary of Katrina. Here we go again....everyone pray. I'd take it here in Alabama to keep New Orleans and South MS. from taking it again.
 
englishleigh,that's a nice unselfish thought,but many in your area may not be so magnamious :)--Marthatex says Texas is still in a drought,so if it hits there,and its minimal,it could actually benefit the lone star state somewhat--they are roastng this year
