Bangkok, Thailand - John Mark Karr may have entered Thailand quietly and anonymously, but on Sunday when he was kicked out of the country his every move was under scrutiny by a worldwide press corps.

Karr, 41, who's accused in the nearly 10-year-old homicide case of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, was driven to the airport by

Thai officials and placed in a holding cell before being loaded on a jet for a 15 1/2-hour flight to Los Angeles. He said nothing as he was paraded before reporters.

The Thai Airways flight then departed about 30 minutes late, and is expected to arrive in Los Angeles about 10 p.m. Mountain time tonight.

It's unclear what will happen then. But U.S. immigration officials speculated that Karr will immediately be served with an arrest warrant by Boulder authorities as soon as he is on U.S. soil. At that point, he may be turned over to Los Angeles authorities, and proceedings will begin to extradite him to Colorado.

Earlier on Sunday in Asia, Karr's day began in a holding cell in the Thailand Immigration Detention Center, where he was served a traditional breakfast of rice and eggs.

Stakeout begins for Karr's return
Media attention angers JonBenet's father

BOULDER, Colo. — Reporters and camera crews crowded the local courthouse grounds Saturday in anticipation of the arrival of teacher John Mark Karr to face charges in the death of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey.

The intense media attention in the case that has fascinated the nation for almost 10 years has outraged JonBenet's father and driven him to consider moving out of the country, a family lawyer said Saturday.

Karr said in a televised statement after being arrested Wednesday in Thailand that he was with JonBenet when she was killed on the day after Christmas 1996 in the basement of the family's home in Boulder. He called the child's death "an accident."

Karr will face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault.

Authorities in Thailand said Karr, 41, would leave on a flight to the United States today. "The tickets for John Mark Karr's departure are ready," Thailand's immigration police chief, Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul, told reporters.

Suwat did not specify the route Karr would take. In the United States, neither federal nor local officials would confirm the timing.

Television crews had already pitched camp Saturday on the grounds of the Boulder County court building in this wealthy college town.

More than 30 journalists representing organizations as far away as Japan attended a meeting Friday to divvy up media seating for Karr's first court appearance — even though the hearing hadn't even been scheduled.

Stone-faced Karr begins long journey to judgment

John Mark Karr is escorted to a plane that will bring him to the United States. The JonBenet Ramsey murder suspect left Thailand Sunday morning and is due to arrive in Los Angeles tonight.STORY TOOLS

BANGKOK, Thailand - Unhappy with media who said he murdered child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsay when he says her death was accidental, John Mark Karr stayed silent and stone-faced as he walked past an army of questioning reporters Sunday on the start of his journey home to face judgment.
Shortly before that moment, Karr "said he doesn’t want to talk to reporters, because they want to portray him as a murderer," according to Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsiskul, head of the Thai immigration police.

The autopsy said JonBenet's skull was fractured before she was strangled with a garrote.

Karr’s silence was a reversal from his stunning willingness to talk three days earlier. Then, just after his arrest, he told a press conference that he’d been present at the death of the blond 6-year-old in her parents’ basement in 1996, but it was an accident.

Thailand revoked Karr’s visa on Thursday and jailed him pending deportation, after Boulder issued a warrant for him for first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault on a child.

Neatly dressed in a dark red dress shirt and grey tie, Karr had ignored the crowd of 100 reporters from around the world who had gathered to watch him walk from the Thai Immigration Detention Center to a van that would take him to the Bangkok airport and a flight back to the United States. He was surrounded by 20 Thai police, who allowed no one close, but gave photographers ample room to record Karr’s departure.

Karr flies to U.S. in style, chatting to officials

ABOARD THAI AIRWAY TO LOS ANGELES — John Mark Karr, the suspect in the murder of 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey, sipped champagne and ate king fried prawns in business class Sunday after being put aboard a flight to Los Angeles to face charges in the United States.

As Karr dined like a tycoon and chatted with the U.S. officials escorting him, Thailand was abuzz with reports that Karr sought treatment at a Thai sex-change clinic.

Karr, who was not charged with any crime in Thailand, was being expelled because he is regarded as an undesirable person. He was not being extradited.

He and three U.S. officials boarded a Thai Airways International flight that took off about 8 p.m. (9 a.m. EDT) for the 15-hour flight to Los Angeles. Karr's journey will eventually end in Boulder, Colo., where he is expected to face charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child sexual assault in connection with the young beauty queen's 1996 killing.

On the plane, the 41-year-old teacher sat in a business class window seat next to Mark Spray, an investigator with the Boulder District Attorney's office. He was not handcuffed. A U.S. Embassy official and an agent with "Homeland Security" emblazoned on his T-shirt were also part of the escort party.

Before takeoff, Karr took a glass of champagne from a cabin attendant and clinked glasses with Spray, who had orange juice.

Dinner was served on a starched white tablecloth. Karr started with a pate, then had a green salad with walnut dressing. The main course was fried king prawn with steamed rice and broccoli. Karr drank a beer, crushing the can with his hands when it was empty, then moved on to a glass of French chardonnay with his main course.

Karr was relaxed, smiling and chatting nonstop with the U.S. officials next to him - until television news crews on the flight turned their cameras on. Then he stopped smiling, clutched the armrests of his seat and stared at his lap.

Strange that now he doesn't want to speak in front of the cameras. I wonder what has changed his mind.
