WTF? They sure do not give you much to go on here - no details of the location, condition of the bodies, ETD, etc. Was this from a mass grave or what?

Hi
I think I remember reading about this a long time ago. They are I think thought to be Haitian immigrants whose boat capsized off of Florida.I think I remember seeing this on the Florida vital statistics.I do not know much more about this.

Interesting, but I wonder why they give COD as "not stated".

Ohhhh, weird. I was looking for articles online but could find none. I guess if the bodies washed up on shore it might explain why the UIDs weren't wearing much clothing? How terribly sad.

Is there anyone who can give me info about 11 unidentified bodies (3 female 8 male) that were found in 1982 in Boca Raton? They were all african american and under 25, I think. They are the new hot cases on the Doe Network, but not much info is listed.

Here's more from a new Hot Case related to the other 13 deaths: The victim was located in 1021 A1A Beach Blvd St. Augustine, Florida on March 31, 1982. From Haitian freighter "Esperancia" that capsized and blew up. Thirteen other victims from the "Esperancia" are listed as Hot Cases 558 - 569. http://doenetwork.org/hot/hotcase579.html

this sounds like refugees. Maybe the bodies washed ashore.
That seems to be what happened, as stated in the original link. The confusion over the incident probably results from cross-jurisdictions between three agencies: USCG, local LE and Immigration. COD appears to have been accidental drowning at sea and this should have been a USCG exclusive following ME's report. However the fact that other agencies appear to still be displaying some intesrest or the fact that the case is still open, could mean that criminal activity (such as piracy) is being considered.

Unless someone in Haiti still remembers who all were aboard the Esperancia this is going to be difficult to solve, I think. Missing persons from 1982 just might not be the greatest concern right now.

This is pretty sad. Apparently, there was initially some confusion as to how many people were on board at the time of the accident. Survivors misled officials claiming only 10 total, which also appeared to be the case when they experienced mechanical troubles and had to stop in the Bahamas. A few passengers were able to swim to shore and then the others began washing up along the coast. From what I gather, 6 survived and 21 perished; 16 of which were buried unidentified. ETA: An article published in 2006 says that 9 were “mourned by loved ones”, leaving 12 unidentified. The article has a fairly disturbing/graphic image of one of the decedents on the beach that day so I’ll refrain from posting that one.
