VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (May 16) - A suitcase containing human remains was found floating near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Sunday, the third such discovery in the area this month. A boater alerted police that he had found the suitcase floating off the second island of the bridge-tunnel, said Virginia Beach police spokesman Don Rimer.

The remains were sent to the state medical examiner's office in Norfolk. Detectives believe the third suitcase is related to the two found previously this month, Rimer said.

On May 11, a graduate student who was bird-watching on Fisherman's Island off Virginia's Eastern Shore found a suitcase containing body parts wrapped in plastic bags, reportedly including a human head. Less than a week earlier, a fisherman discovered a suitcase containing human remains near the fourth island of the bridge-tunnel.

Police described the remains as being those of a white male. Police said it was not immediately known how long the man had been dead or his identity.
 
So do all three suitcases contain parts of the same dead guy or are these 3 different dead guys? I'm confused.

No identification yet, but DNA and fingerprints have apparently been submitted for comparison to data banks. (Fingerprints from the corpse probably indicates that the body was in the water less than a month)

Makes sense. Obviously didn't have one suitcase big enough. I would assume if they were trying to confuse the issue, the suitcases would have been dumped in separate places.
 
The wife of a New Jersey man whose body was hacked up, put in three suitcases and dumped in waters off the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel last year was arrested Thursday morning in his slaying.

Melanie McGuire, 32, of Brick, N.J., was to be charged Thursday afternoon with first-degree murder in the killing of William T. McGuire, said John R. Hagerty, spokesman for the state Division of Criminal Justice.

The "Suitcase Killer" has been identified by authorities as a "demure" mother of two named Melanie McGuire.

Yesterday, they accused the 32-year-old Ocean County woman of shooting her husband, then carefully cutting him up -- likely with help -- and stuffing the parts in three suitcases, then dumping them off the Virginia coast last year.

Melanie McGuire, of Brick, was nabbed by police in Metuchen after she dropped her two young children off at daycare yesterday morning.

She was charged with first-degree murder and could get the death penalty if convicted of the murder of her husband, William, 39, last May.

Black trash garbage bags used to dispose of her husband’s body parts, match those used in New Jersey to bag her husband’s belongings, investigators say.

Forensics were also done with tape used on the bags, that had fingernail polish on it, "that once again link Mrs. McGuire to the killer," said Attorney General Peter Harvey. "She did not act alone. Our investigation is ongoing."

High-tech analysis was done on cellular phone calls, and also on bullets she bought compared with bullets in her husband’s body parts found 350 miles away, said Fuentes.

Brettel said the most unusual forensics involved "looking at the bags, how they were manufactured, how you look at one bag and how it may be related to another bag." He said there is dye streaking that comes off the production lines.

Asked if there were fingerprints on the tape used on the trash bags, he just smiled and said, "I can’t make any comment."

The first suitcase floated up from the depths of the Chesapeake Bay on May 5, 2004, and was found by a fisherman.

Over the next nine days, two more followed. The three pieces of the matching, imitation leather luggage contained the dismembered body of William T. McGuire, a 39-year-old former Navy man, an NJIT computer analyst and the father of two young boys, one with autism.

As she was arrested Thursday for her husband's murder, the story grew more complex. According to an affidavit in the case, Melanie McGuire was carrying on an affair during the time of the murder with a doctor she worked with at a Morristown fertility clinic, the investigator said.

State authorities are investigating an anonymous letter that claims Melanie McGuire did not fatally shoot her husband, whose dismembered body was found floating in suitcases in the Chesapeake Bay last year.

"This is significant evidence in an ongoing investigation," said Paul Loriquet, a spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, which is prosecuting the case for the state. "No theory is being ruled out as to the authorship."

Law enforcement authorities do not believe McGuire acted alone and said they are pursuing other suspects who may have helped her.

At the end of the four-page letter, the author claims to know details about the murder that authorities have never disclosed, such as that William McGuire "was wearing nothing but purple briefs when you found him." It also states that news articles "made it seem like his arms were cut off. They weren't."

Henry Klingeman, the Madison attorney representing Melanie McGuire, said the letter is "obviously from somebody who wants us to believe he knows details of the murder that only somebody involved in the murder would know."

The letter writer appears to have known McGuire well, disclosing details about his work, his relationships, his gambling habits. It claims he had a drug habit and spoke about being "rid" of his wife, suggesting he meant to kill Melanie McGuire.

The letter chides investigators for dismissing a connection between his death and his gambling habit.

NEWARK, N.J. -- A woman charged in June with killing her husband has been indicted on charges of murder and the desecration of his corpse, which washed up in suitcases in waters off Virginia, authorities said today.


Melanie McGuire was also accused of perjury and a weapons violation, according to the four-count indictment handed up by a state grand jury on Tuesday and made public today.

McGuire, 32, could face a term of 30 years to life if convicted in the death of William T. McGuire.

"The state is not seeking the death penalty at this time," said John R. Hagerty, a spokesman for the state Division of Criminal Justice.
 
Woman accused of murder posts bail

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. A woman accused of killing her husband and dismembering the body has posted two (m) million dollars bail in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Melanie McGuire was released from a New Jersey jail on Saturday night. She pleaded innocent to charges of murder, desecration of a corpse, perjury and a weapons violation.

Wonder if she also wrote the letter that LE recieved? The letter claimed that his death was related to his gambling debts, but the letter writer also claimed to know details about the death that LE didn't publicize.
 
TRENTON, N.J. — Nearly three years after suitcases full of body parts washed up along Chesapeake Bay in Virginia, a nurse who helped infertile women conceive is to go on trial this week on charges that she killed and dismembered her husband.

Melanie McGuire is charged with first-degree murder in the April 2004 killing of her husband, 39-year-old state computer analyst William T. McGuire. She pleaded not guilty and has remained free on $2.1 million bail.

Her trial was scheduled to open Monday at Middlesex County Courthouse in New Brunswick, and state Superior Court Judge Frederick DeVesa estimated the proceeding will last four to five weeks.

The judge has instructed lawyers in the case to restrict their comments outside the courtroom.

I wonder who posted the $210,000 bail. I mean in an earlier post it states that they lived in an apartment. They were in their early thirties and both working. You'd of thought they would have been able to put a downpayment on at least a starter house - but it does mention his gambling habit. Maybe her family has money, or maybe the doctor she was having an affair with posted bail. Inquiring minds need to know! LOL

From reading the link, it looks like they have a lot of evidence against this woman. Once again, so sad, that this spouse did not opt for divorce. I suspect it is the age old reason of MONEY and GREED. Hopefully, she and her accomplice(s) will get what she/they deserve.
 
Where is the outrage and the calls for the death penalty for this woman like there is for the Michigan man who dismembered his wife? Typical.
 
Ummm, DK I do feel outrage and want the death penalty for this woman, but there is so much crap here like this to wade through each day and one cannot comment on all of it. And don't forget there are folks on WS screaming for Mary Winkler's head on a silver platter so please do not play the 'sympathy for the woman' card because it would be a slap in the face to almost everyone here at WS since most of us truly want's justice for ALL vicitms regardless of race, creed, color, sex or religious preference. :snooty:

Mary Winkler is out on bail and holding a job. I have yet to see a man get that for such a crime. The justice system is easier on women. Some people cannot believe Darlie Routier could be guilty and on death row.

The tone of this thread compared to the other one is noticeable. Just calling it like I sees it. :snooty:
