Woman claims father used her for child *advertiser censored*

By David Leone, Wake Weekly Staff Writer

July 26, 2007

A woman walked into the Wake Forest police department in late June and told officers her father had used her for child *advertiser censored* when she was a young teenager, Lt. Trent Coleman said.
After searching a Wake Forest home at 407 W. Cedar Ave. June 28, officers arrested John Thomas Davis, 58 and charged him with third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, a felony.
“When we searched the house we found all kinds of digital media on CDs, floppy disks, movies — that kind of stuff,” Coleman said. He said more than 1,000 pornographic pictures of the girl appeared on those materials.
Police also seized a suitcase containing a large amount of money, Coleman said. The amount was not cited.
But since the crime appears to have taken place at the family home in Granville County years ago, the only charge Wake Forest Police have levied so far is the third-degree charge, which pertains to possession of child *advertiser censored* materials, Coleman said.
By no means is that the only charge against Davis, though.
Davis was taken to the Wake County jail and placed under a $5,000 bond.
Monday, Granville County Sheriff’s officers re-arrested Davis and charged him with 35 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child, Sheriff’s Detective Vicki Hicks said Tuesday.
Davis was taken to the Granville County jail and placed on a $500,000 bond, she said.
The individual counts correspond to separate occurrences of Davis engaging in sexual acts with the girl, Hicks said.
Hicks declined to reveal any more details while the investigation continues.
Coleman said the victim, who was not named, is now in her 20s, and was 14-15 years old when the crimes occurred. Noelle Talley, public information officer for the N.C. Attorney General’s office, which oversees the SBI, said the crime occurred sometime between June 2000 and June 2001.
The State Bureau of Investigation, which assisted on the warrant search of Davis’ Wake Forest home, is aiding the inquiry, Coleman said.
“The SBI is now going to examine his computer,” he said, to see if more images or videos can be found.
At this time there is no evidence yet that Davis committed any sex crimes in Wake Forest, Coleman said, adding the police and SBI investigations will continue.

Thank goodness this young woman had the courage to go to LE and turn him in! It must not have been easy since he's her father.

Good for that brave young woman for speaking up!

Why is it only a third degree charge for possession of child *advertiser censored*? It should be a higher degree felony.

April 2009:

United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle today sentenced JOHN THOMAS DAVIS, 59, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, to seven consecutive 20-year prison terms for using a child to create a series of sadistic sex abuse images in 2000 and 2001, and for receiving third party images of child sex abuse between 2005 and 2007. This was the maximum punishment permitted by law. DAVIS was further ordered to pay restitution to the victim in the amount of $480,000. DAVIS pled guilty in February to a Criminal Information filed by the United States Attorney’s Office charging him with six counts of manufacturing child *advertiser censored* and one count of receipt of child *advertiser censored*.
