Body of Judy Calder, UNR professor, identified

Family business associate, with an alias, is suspect

SPARKS -- A body found in rural northeastern Nevada has been positively identified as that of a missing University of Nevada, Reno professor, and a family friend has been targeted as the suspect in her death, police said Saturday.

Sparks Police Cmdr. Steve Asher said an investigation and autopsy revealed 64-year-old Judy Calder, an associate professor in UNR's Department of Human Development and Family Studies, was stabbed to death Aug. 18 at the Reno business Imaging Technologies.

Investigators think her body then was driven to Elko County, where it was found Tuesday along old Highway 93, about 375 miles northeast of Reno.

One of the owners of the Reno business, Ricky Barge, 50, was identified as the suspect. Asher said Calder and her family were friends and business associates of Barge, but police were unsure of the exact nature of the relationship.

His name was Rickey Barge, a middle-aged man who had turned up in Reno in about 2004. Despite his western name, he spoke with an accent and seemed to be of exotic origin, perhaps Middle Eastern.

The Calders met Barge through his business equipment firm, Imaging Technologies. They often did business with one another, and their professional relationship became a friendship. Barge would later say Judy Calder “was like a mother to me.” But Barge proved to be a burdensome friend...

Authorities learned that Barge had rented a van and crossed the border into Mexico after the murder. They also learned his real name: Mohamed Kamaludeen, the fugitive from the 1993 Toronto pinky-ring murder.

A man convicted of killing a University of Nevada, Reno professor was ordered to spend the rest of his life in prison by a judge who told him he would die behind bars.

Mohamed Kamaludeen, 47, also was sentenced by Washoe District Judge Patrick Flanagan to an additional 20 years for using a deadly weapon and another nine years for killing someone over 60.

"This is not a life sentence. This is a death sentence," Flanagan told Kamaludeen. "It is the intention of this court that you die in prison."
