The wife and son of a missing Florida man, who once worked for the FBI, plan to visit Tehran this month to press the Iranian government about his case, the U.S. Department of State said.

Robert Levinson, of Coral Springs, Florida, was last seen March 8 on Kish Island, a resort off the southern coast of Iran, where he had gone to seek information on cigarette smuggling for a client of his security firm.

Levinson, 59, a father of seven and former FBI agent in New York and Florida, retired in 1998.

His wife, Christine, believes he is in Iran because his name has not shown up on any flight manifests of planes leaving the country and his passport has not been used anywhere.

Iran's Foreign Ministry says it will allow an American woman to travel to Tehran to investigate for herself the disappearance of her husband, a former FBI agent.

Robert Levinson of Coral Springs, Florida, was last seen in March at a resort island off Iran's southern coast. He was there seeking information on cigarette smuggling for a client of his private security firm.

The State Department had said that Christine Levinson planned to visit Tehran this month to press the Iranian government on her husband's case.

It has been almost two years since retired FBI Agent Robert Levinson vanished on a business trip to Iran.

Levinson was investigating a cigarette smuggling case for private clients when he disappeared March 9, 2007, on Kish Island in the Persian Gulf, his family says. He had left his hotel and was on his way to catch a flight home to south Florida.

Missing Coral Springs man's children comfort each other

Earlier this month the Obama administration envoy Richard Holbrooke gave Iranian officials a letter requesting information about Levinson and two Americans imprisoned in Iran. A small team of FBI agents, aided by businessmen with contacts in Iran, has also been trying to find him.

The U.S. government doesn't even know for sure that he's alive. Iran officials have said they know nothing about him. One theory is that Levinson, like the two other Americans, is being held in an Iranian prison.

An expatriate Iranian businessman said his contacts in Iran told him that Iran's Revolutionary Guard held Levinson for some period of time at a site under its control near Tehran.

Because no group claims custody of him, some people familiar with Levinson's case speculate he died in captivity. Others believe the silence surrounding his whereabouts suggests that because of his FBI background, his captors consider him a valuable chip to hold for now and use later in an exchange of prisoners.

Still, with the latest government intervention, family members hope they are closer to getting him back.

Christine Levinson said she's encouraged because the case has gotten the attention of Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Clinton meets wife of American missing in Iran

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday met the wife of Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who went missing in March 2007 on an Iranian island in the Gulf.
Clinton "wanted to have this meeting so that she could express her concerns about the lack of information coming out of Iran with regard to Bob Levinson," said Robert Wood, a State Department spokesman.
"This case is obviously a very heart-wrenching humanitarian one," said Wood.
"We continue to call on Iran to provide information about Mr Levinson. It has not been forthcoming, and we're going to continue to press this issue."

U.S. calls on Iran to help find missing Broward man

WASHINGTON -- The White House and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton upped the pressure on Iran Thursday to divulge information about Robert Levinson, a retired South Florida FBI agent who went missing from a Persian Gulf island in March 2007.

The call from the White House came as the Coral Springs man's family marked the 1,000th day of his disappearance with meetings at the State Department and FBI. National Security Advisor James L. Jones also met with the family ``to reassure them that Bob's case remains a priority for the United States,'' the White House said.

``The United States calls on the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to assist in providing any information on Mr. Levinson's whereabouts and in ensuring his prompt and safe return to his family,'' White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement. ``Obviously this is a deeply painful day for Bob's family and friends.''

Missing ex-FBI agent's wife: 'I won't abandon you'

The wife of a retired FBI agent who disappeared four years ago in Iran marked the couple's 37th wedding anniversary with a plaintive message Friday on the family's website, saying she won't abandon her search, but she's at a loss as to how to bring him home.

The family just released a video they received from Bob Levinson's captors; the video shows Bob speaking and requesting help from the US government.

The family was later sent a set of photos, with Bob in an orange jumpsuit like those worn in prisons; each photo had Mr. Levinson with a different sign attached around his neck, with one stating, "Why you cannot help me". (guessing those who wrote it do not posses the best English skills)

The family received these e-mails and were able to track the IP address to an INTERNET café in Pakistan (video) and the other was tracked to Afghanistan (pictures).

The family also released their own message to whomever has kidnapped Mr. Levinson, requesting more info as diplomatic channels have not been successful in locating the missing husband/father.

Asking ALL the great WS members who read this, to say a prayer for the safe and soon return of Bob Levinson to his family in Florida.

I can't imagine the nightmare this family has endured all these years! :(

Robert Levinson sought five years after disappearing near Iran

A simple plea: 'Return my father'

It is approaching five years since my father, Robert "Bob" Levinson, disappeared on Kish Island off the coast of Iran in March 2007. Earlier this year, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that my family had received proof my father is alive and is believed to be held somewhere in southwest Asia. Earlier this month, my family released that proof, a video we received in November 2010 of my father pleading for help. We had kept it private in order not to jeopardize the FBI's continuing investigation into his disappearance.

I BELIEVE BRINGING THIS MAN HOME ALIVE AND WELL SHOULD BE A PRIORITY. I was rather disappointed to find out how little effort our country puts into bringing our military veterans home. This man deserves our attention just as much. He's retired from the FBI. Who has him? Where is he?

It would be great if we could get some response and activity going on to encourage bringing Robert Levinson home. The longer he is detained, the more likely they won't be returning him alive. What's the point to detaining him?

The family of a retired New York G-man who vanished five years ago in Iran sent a message Tuesday to the monster who runs the country — and it got through to him.

With world leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly, Robert Levinson’s kin and the FBI put up billboards in Times Square and on subway entrances near the United Nations pleading for the international community to help find the missing man.
