Jury: Man Guilty of Murder in Route 60 Deaths

Pittsburgh (KDKA) An Allegheny County jury has found a local man guilty of third-degree murder for the deaths of his pregnant girlfriend and her unborn child.

Late this afternoon, jurors convicted Aaron Luster of two counts of third-degree murder for the deaths of Christine Karcher, 33, of Coraopolis and her unborn son last year.

Prosecutors say Luster and Karcher got into an argument and Luster either pushed or urged Karcher to jump from the car he was driving along Route 60 in Moon Township on January 28, 2003.

According to police, another vehicle then struck and killed Karcher, who was seven months

A Moon Township man who is the first person in Allegheny County convicted of causing the death of a fetus will spend the next 14 to 28 years in state prison.

Common Pleas Judge Robert E. Colville sentenced Aaron Thomas Luster... to serve consecutive prison terms of seven to 14 years each for the deaths of 35-year-old Christine Karcher of Coraopolis and their 7½-month-old unborn son...

The case drew national attention because Karcher's final several minutes were caught on tapes of 911 emergency calls made while the pregnant woman and Luster were driving along Interstate 79 and the Parkway. Karcher was heard on the tapes crying for help and saying Luster was trying to kill her. Within minutes of the final call, Karcher was run over by a car as she lay facedown in the middle of the right lane of the Parkway near the Montour Run Road exit.
