France - Michel Fourniret & Monique Olivier, charged in 7 murders, 1987-2001

Fourniret looks like a math teacher. I wonder if it's customary for all murder suspects in France to wear bullet-proof vests or if it's just for special cases?

What a buffoon, thinking he could boycott his own trial.

CHARLEVILLE-MEZIERES, France (AP) -- A French court has convicted Michel Fourniret of murdering seven girls and young women and sentenced him to life in prison.

His wife, Monique Olivier, has been convicted of complicity in some of the killings and sentenced to life in prison. Fourniret is 66 and his wife is 59.

The verdict Wednesday closes a two-month trial that riveted France and neighboring Belgium, where one of the victims was killed.

The young women aged 12 to 21 were either strangled, shot or stabbed with a screwdriver between 1987 and 2001 to feed what prosecutors called his obsession for virgins.

Lawyers for the couple had earlier said they wouldn't appeal if they were convicted by the criminal court in Charleville-Mezieres, near the Belgian border.

The lead prosecutor called Olivier "a witch," while Fourniret's own defense lawyer described him Tuesday as "indefensible." Fourniret refused counsel and remained silent through most of the trial that began March 27.

During the trial Fourniret toyed with the court and victims' relatives and friends.

his crimes were unspeakable. he was caught when he tried to abduct a 13-year-old girl in June 2003.

the girl freed herself from what he had tied her with and escaped from the back of his van which he had bunged her in.

she had the presence of mind to get his licence plate number.

investigators believe he may be involved with several other murders. i would think almost certainly he is!

he has been compared with Marc Dutroux, the Belgian paedophile and murderer.

i'm only glad they got the wife as well. :furious:

They met when he requested a pen pal while in jail for sexual assault charges. He is only the fourth person in France to be given a life sentence. They may face trial for more murders of young girls.

French couple labelled 'a devil with two faces'

A FRENCH serial killer known as the "Ogre of Ardennes" has been convicted with his wife over the rape and murder of seven young women in one of the most disturbing trials France has witnessed in years.

Prosecutors called Michel Fourniret, 66, and his accomplice, Monique Olivier, 59, "a devil with two faces" and "inhuman and cruel criminals, the likes of which our country could have never imagined".

The court in Charleville-Mezieres, in north-east France, heard how Fourniret had made a gruesome pact with Olivier, a nurse, in which she would help to ensnare virgins.

From 1987 to 2001, seven girls and young women aged between 12 and 22 were shot, strangled or stabbed with a screwdriver in sexually charged attacks.

The grey-haired husband and wife described as the cruellest criminals France has ever known have been given life sentences for the rape and murder of seven girls and women during an obsessive 16-year quest for virgins.

At the end of a trial which stunned even the most hardened of observers, Michel Fourniret, 66, was barred from seeking parole under a verdict designed to ensure he will die in prison.

The serial killer dubbed the Ogre of the Ardennes became only the fourth person in French legal history to receive a complete life term. Monique Olivier, 59, his wife and accomplice, will not be able to request parole until 2036 after she was found guilty of luring his victims to their deaths.

I agree. The woman received 28 years. She's just as guilty as he is.

I'm surprised that this is only the 4th time a life sentence has been given in France.

Is this the guy who has just confessed to killing British student Joanna Parrish in 1990? I can’t find any other threads.

Yes, same case.

....As well as confessing to Joanna's murder in a secret interview in a Paris courtroom he has also allegedly admitted another unsolved murder - that of Marie-Angèle Domece, a mentally disabled girl who disappeared on July 8, 1988, and whose body has never been found.

Maybe if he confessed, he'll confess to other killings. I honestly believe he also killed these females.

Also, does anyone know if he went to Germany, Austria, Poland or the Netherlands? Doe Network isn't very reliable and doesn't feature every missing case, which causes looking some of these cases, especially from non-English-speaking countries to be a nightmare.

Michel Fourniret acknowledges the murder of Estelle Mouzin

Michel Fourniret, indicted for the abduction and murder in 2003 of Estelle Mouzin in Seine-et-Marne, "has acknowledged his participation in the events," the Paris public prosecutor's office said Saturday, confirming information previously revealed by several media.
The 77-year-old serial killer, who has long denied his involvement in the disappearance of the nine-year-old girl, confessed during three days of questioning that ended Friday evening in the office of investigating judge Sabine Khéris. He has already been convicted of the murders of eight young women or teenage girls between 1987 and 2001.
