Angie's Story
On August 18, 2001 my sister filed for an order of protection from her husband. The judge granted the order and told my sister since she had 2 children that she could stay at the residence for 1 year while she got a job and found a place to live. The judge also ok'd her husband to be at his place of work from 8am - 4pm. His place of business was only 200 ft from the house, and the entire property is surrounded by trees. As they were leaving the courthouse her husband looked at her and said "you'll be out by Christmas". My aunt witnessed this. My sister told my aunt that if anything ever happened to her to get her journals because she was documenting everything her husband did to her.
On the morning of September 20, 2001 my sister walked her kids to the bus stop then returned home. The elderly neighbors that lived at the end of the driveway witnessed her walk back home and they said they never saw anyone else that day go up or down the driveway except for her husband. Their home was down a long dirt driveway surrounded by trees. My sister had her 2nd appointment with her divorce attorney that day and she never showed up for the appointment. Her kids returned from school but couldn't find her so they asked their step dad and he told them that she went somewhere.
That night she was going to have dinner with my aunt and cousin.
My aunt tried to call to see if my sister wanted her to bring anything for dinner but the phone wasn't working so she drove over. When she arrived the kids told her that they couldn't find their mom. She walked in the house and there was food on the table and counter that was 1/2 prepared. Meat that was being cut into chucks and veggies on the table that had been cut up also. My sisters car, sunglasses (she had an eye condition that made it impossible for her to go in the sunlight without her very dark glasses) purse, all clothing and jewelry were still at the house. My aunt asked the kids why they didn't call her and they told her that the phone was broken.
My aunt tried the phone and it was dead. She used her cell phone and contacted the local sheriffs department. When the deputies arrived they wrote down my sisters information, glanced around the kitchen and living room then walked around outside of the house. One of the deputies told my aunt before her left that the phone line had been disabled.
My Aunt left with the kids. And she called me and my younger sister. We flew to NC and went to the sheriffs department. When we arrived to talk to the detectives, the 1st thing we were asked is if my sister was Wiccan - I confirmed that this was true and the detective told me he was currently studying alternative religions and from what he had learned sometimes the sadist would kidnap Wiccan believers and use them for sacrifice. Then we went through a series of other question and answers - all the usual stuff. Then I told the 2nd detective that my sister needed medication because she was bipolar. He looked at my younger sister and I and said, oh she probably just ran away and we can't do anything about that. And that was seriously the end of the interview. I still regret to this day ever saying that. The next day we went to Angies house to get her belonging and the kids belongings. When we arrived her husbands adult son was there to let us in, stating his dad had to go out of town. We walked around the house and gathered their belongings. All of my sisters belongings were still at the residence. We also located 2 journals in her room, one contained poems and the second had a number of ripped out pages. There was a sun room off of the kitchen that had a large deep freeze in it her husbands adult son stopped me and would not let us enter the room telling us that she didn't have anything in there. He stood in front of that doorway the entire time we were in the house but he did not stop us from entering his dad's office. Then he escorted us to his dads workshop (he was a cabinet maker) He let us go in every room including that room where he was growing multiple marijuana plants but once again guarded the doorway to the room that contained the large saws. When we left I immediately called the one of the detectives and was told "I'll look into it" - every time I called and asked them about it after that they would blow me off. The current detective on the case, to date has not been able to locate any notation of me calling and relaying this information in my sisters case file.
One week after we left my sisters home, her husband gave my sisters car away to her supposed "best friend". Come to find out they were a couple before my sister and again when he gave her my sisters car. Their relationship lasted approx 1 year. She would not talk to me and my younger sister when we were in NC and would not speak to the police until 2008. The only thing my family and I have been told every year is that they have interviewed her husband twice and both times he was asked to take a lie detector, both times he refused. The current detective on the case has been trying to do an interview with the husbands adult son and every time they schedule he cancels or no shows. She has also tried to speak with the friend again but she back to refusing to speak with them.
I'm just frustrated and irritated that none of this raised any red flags with them over the years. I feel her husband possibly had friends on the force at the time of her disappearance, and maybe thats why there was never a real investigation done in the beginning. We currently have a new detective on the case but I worry that everything that should have been checked out then is gone now. Hopefully the new detective will be able to find a reason to do an actual investigation and search of the property.
So that's my sisters story. Please keep sharing and hopefully one day soon we can bring her home.
