It's not easy to look at Web sites to find information about unidentified dead people.

Especially when you're looking for your sister.

But that's the world in which Melissa Hopkins has lived for more than six years, ever since Angela Whalen Hudson disappeared from her Pelham home in 2001.

It's hard to not know what happened to someone you love. After a few years, Hopkins became discouraged as the trail grew cold.

But in recent months, she pushed forward again, and the effort is paying off. The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office will take a fresh look at the case.

Angela has been missing for 13 years today.

Bumping, where are you Angela?

9 days after 9/11...Is it possible she was so distraught over the events, maybe even lost someone there and didn't tell anybody since she was described as a very private person? Possible suicide?

She left her vehicle behind so I assume she either walked away on foot or someone picked her up.

I think there are some important details missing in this case. Was she involved with shady people? A history of drugs, mental illness? Has the kids' father(s) been cleared as a suspect?

Angie's Story
On August 18, 2001 my sister filed for an order of protection from her husband. The judge granted the order and told my sister since she had 2 children that she could stay at the residence for 1 year while she got a job and found a place to live. The judge also ok'd her husband to be at his place of work from 8am - 4pm. His place of business was only 200 ft from the house, and the entire property is surrounded by trees. As they were leaving the courthouse her husband looked at her and said "you'll be out by Christmas". My aunt witnessed this. My sister told my aunt that if anything ever happened to her to get her journals because she was documenting everything her husband did to her.
On the morning of September 20, 2001 my sister walked her kids to the bus stop then returned home. The elderly neighbors that lived at the end of the driveway witnessed her walk back home and they said they never saw anyone else that day go up or down the driveway except for her husband. Their home was down a long dirt driveway surrounded by trees. My sister had her 2nd appointment with her divorce attorney that day and she never showed up for the appointment. Her kids returned from school but couldn't find her so they asked their step dad and he told them that she went somewhere.
That night she was going to have dinner with my aunt and cousin.
My aunt tried to call to see if my sister wanted her to bring anything for dinner but the phone wasn't working so she drove over. When she arrived the kids told her that they couldn't find their mom. She walked in the house and there was food on the table and counter that was 1/2 prepared. Meat that was being cut into chucks and veggies on the table that had been cut up also. My sisters car, sunglasses (she had an eye condition that made it impossible for her to go in the sunlight without her very dark glasses) purse, all clothing and jewelry were still at the house. My aunt asked the kids why they didn't call her and they told her that the phone was broken.
My aunt tried the phone and it was dead. She used her cell phone and contacted the local sheriff’s department. When the deputies arrived they wrote down my sisters information, glanced around the kitchen and living room then walked around outside of the house. One of the deputies told my aunt before her left that the phone line had been disabled.
My Aunt left with the kids. And she called me and my younger sister. We flew to NC and went to the sheriff’s department. When we arrived to talk to the detectives, the 1st thing we were asked is if my sister was Wiccan - I confirmed that this was true and the detective told me he was currently studying alternative religions and from what he had learned sometimes the sadist would kidnap Wiccan believers and use them for sacrifice. Then we went through a series of other question and answers - all the usual stuff. Then I told the 2nd detective that my sister needed medication because she was bipolar. He looked at my younger sister and I and said, “oh she probably just ran away and we can't do anything about that”. And that was seriously the end of the interview. I still regret to this day ever saying that. The next day we went to Angie’s house to get her belonging and the kids belongings. When we arrived her husband’s adult son was there to let us in, stating his dad had to go out of town. We walked around the house and gathered their belongings. All of my sisters’ belongings were still at the residence. We also located 2 journals in her room, one contained poems and the second had a number of ripped out pages. There was a sun room off of the kitchen that had a large deep freeze in it – her husband’s adult son stopped me and would not let us enter the room telling us that she didn't have anything in there. He stood in front of that doorway the entire time we were in the house but he did not stop us from entering his dad's office. Then he escorted us to his dads workshop (he was a cabinet maker) He let us go in every room including that room where he was growing multiple marijuana plants but once again guarded the doorway to the room that contained the large saws. When we left I immediately called the one of the detectives and was told "I'll look into it" - every time I called and asked them about it after that they would blow me off. The current detective on the case, to date has not been able to locate any notation of me calling and relaying this information in my sister’s case file.
One week after we left my sister’s home, her husband gave my sisters car away to her supposed "best friend". Come to find out they were a couple before my sister and again when he gave her my sisters car. Their relationship lasted approx 1 year. She would not talk to me and my younger sister when we were in NC and would not speak to the police until 2008. The only thing my family and I have been told every year is that they have interviewed her husband twice and both times he was asked to take a lie detector, both times he refused. The current detective on the case has been trying to do an interview with the husbands’ adult son and every time they schedule he cancels or no shows. She has also tried to speak with the friend again but she back to refusing to speak with them.
I'm just frustrated and irritated that none of this raised any red flags with them over the years. I feel her husband possibly had friends on the force at the time of her disappearance, and maybe that’s why there was never a real investigation done in the beginning. We currently have a new detective on the case but I worry that everything that should have been checked out then is gone now. Hopefully the new detective will be able to find a reason to do an actual investigation and search of the property.
So that's my sisters’ story. Please keep sharing and hopefully one day soon we can bring her home.

Just a thought, but has anyone ever noticed if the " long dirt road " that leads to the house had ever appeared to have been disturbed in some way? imo, speculation.

It's very clear from this detailed account by Angie's sister that her husband did something. And that law enforcement in charge of the case have been remiss in so many ways! Very disgusting. And we wonder where stereotypes of lazy cops, especially derelict southern state cops, come from. My heart hurts for Angie's family as she is an example of someone trying to leave an abusive situation. She got no protection from the protection order. I am wondering how old her kids were at time she went missing, and did they go live with their bio father-it sounds like they weren't Angie's estranged husband's children? This case is getting freezing cold. How sad for the family. A P.I. agency is the only thing I'd be suggesting at this time, nearly 19 years later. I wonder if searches or excavations were ever done on the property, and is estranged husband still living?

It was some time ago you posted this but would like to invite that you become a verified insider and I'm hoping a moderator here could explain how to go about that. It is for the family members of a missing person on this forum, and someone should have noticed your post before now and explained this before.

I'm very sorry that Angie continues to be missing 20 years now-tomorrow-that is tragic- please know we remember missing persons here at Websleuths and want to be of support.

She would not talk to me and my younger sister when we were in NC and would not speak to the police until 2008. The only thing my family and I have been told every year is that they have interviewed her husband twice and both times he was asked to take a lie detector, both times he refused. The current detective on the case has been trying to do an interview with the husbands adult son and every time they schedule he cancels or no shows. She has also tried to speak with the friend again but she back to refusing to speak with them.
I'm just frustrated and irritated that none of this raised any red flags with them over the years. I feel her husband possibly had friends on the force at the time of her disappearance, and maybe thats why there was never a real investigation done in the beginning. We currently have a new detective on the case but I worry that everything that should have been checked out then is gone now. Hopefully the new detective will be able to find a reason to do an actual investigation and search of the property.
So that's my sisters story. Please keep sharing and hopefully one day soon we can bring her home.
There was a sun room off of the kitchen that had a large deep freeze in it her husbands adult son stopped me and would not let us enter the room telling us that she didn't have anything in there.

Seems to me that the detectives are dismissing all that points to the X ,the comment you’ll be out by
Xmas , the phones not working, the elderly couple that never saw her leave, that she left without her meds and glasses, the deep freezer in the sun room and wouldn’t let them in the room where the saws were at. He’s got the cops in his back pocket. The fact that she is bipolar I think plays a big part of why there was not much emphasis on this. I’m sure I don’t know all of the facts here ,
But it seems that if bipolar enters the equation they wellll…. It’s got to be the fault of bipolar.
I might be wrong but hey that’s my opinion.

Details of Disappearance

Angela was last seen by her husband, Robert Hudson, at approximately 10:00 a.m. on September 20, 2001 at her residence of the 9700 block of NC700 in Ruffin, North Carolina. She lived in a rural area and the only place within walking distance was a small convenience store, but she left her car behind. She has never been heard from again.

Angela filed for divorce shortly before her disappearance; she went missing on the day her second meeting with her divorce attorney was scheduled. She missed that appointment. She had gotten a restraining order against Robert, but as Robert was a cabinet-maker and his workshop was attached to the Hudson home, the judge allowed him to be at the workshop during working hours without being in violation of the order.

Robert was the last person to see Angela. He said he was in his workshop when Angela told him she had to go "do something." After walking her two children to the school bus stop, she left the house on foot and never returned. When her children returned home from school, she wasn't there.

Angela and her children had planned on having a relative over for dinner, and the relative had been trying to get in touch with them, but couldn't because Angela's phone wasn't working. Finally she just over there and found Angela gone. The meal was lying half-prepared in the kitchen.

Angela left all her belongings behind at her residence, including her car, purse, jewelry, eyeglasses and medication. Her family describes her as a devoted mother who would have never left her children without someone to care for them, not even during a flare-up of her bipolar disorder. Robert was not the children's father and he did not want to support them.

Angela grew up in Arizona. Her family describes her as a very private person who kept things to herself, and they stated she had a pattern of getting involved in abusive relationships. Her case remains unsolved.
