William Jacobson

State police divers recovered the 19-year-old freshman's body from a campus pond Wednesday morning. An autopsy completed on Thursday showed no signs of injury. A toxicology screening, which would show whether alcohol or drugs played a part in Jacobson's death, are not expected for several weeks.

Officers searching for missing Marshall teen

MARSHALL, Minn. (AP) - Law enforcement officers are searching for a 19-year-old Marshall man whose car was found abandoned in a ditch northwest of Taunton.

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says Brandon Swanson's Chevrolet Lumina was found shortly after noon Wednesday at the Lyon-Lincoln county line in southwestern Minnesota.

Swanson's parents called the sheriff about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday to say they had gotten a cell phone call from their son, who said he had gone into a ditch.

Cell Phone Used To Locate Teen's Car

A tri-county search is underway for a teen near the town of Taunton, Minnesota. Brandon Swanson, 19, was reported missing early Wednesday morning, and on Thursday crews narrowed their search thanks to a cell phone call.

Search teams found Brandon Swanson's car a half mile north of Minnesota Highway 68 on the border between Lincoln county and Lyon county. If Swanson had made a 911 call from the location it would have taken almost no time to find him because dispatchers and law enforcement officers would have been able to trace his location to within at least 300 feet.

Search for teen continues

LYON COUNTY — The search for Brandon Swanson, 19, of Marshall continued into its second day in Lyon County on Thursday. Swanson was reported missing Wednesday morning by his parents when they couldn’t find or reach him.

They contacted authorities after a cellular telephone call earlier that morning when Swanson told his parents his car went into a ditch, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department said.

It was believed he was going to Marshall from Canby, where he attends Minnesota West college, Lyon County Sheriff Joel Dahl said.

The search on Thursday focused on an area near Taunton and the Lincoln-Lyon County Line road, less than a half-mile north of the intersection with Minnesota Highway 68. The search area included land along the Yellow Medicine River.

“At this point we’re not calling it a recovery effort,” Dahl said at about 4 p.m. Thursday. The search would continue Thursday evening, he said.

Dahl did say that with friends and family looking for him, it seems unlikely Swanson could be with a friend or be unaware of the search for him.

“We just have not found him,” Dahl said.

Thanks for posting this here, Cheko. We did have it posted on the main thread, but forgot to add it. Hugs~

Thanks for adding Brandon Cheko. I was just coming here to do it. :(

I've been following the case and was hoping they'd find him. Not looking too good at this point.

I just posted this latest news article on his thread in the 'missing' section. Same thing they've been saying for over a week.

Search continues for missing Marshall teen

MARSHALL, Minn. (AP) - Authorities in southwestern Minnesota are looking for a 19-year-old Marshall man whose car apparently went into a ditch near Taunton.

Brandon Swanson has been missing since early Wednesday, when he called his father via cell phone. Authorities say Swanson told his father he had run his car into a ditch, but that he was not hurt. His father called back, but that call ended abruptly.

Lyon County Sheriff Joel Dahl says he has no reason to think Swanson was impaired at the time of the accident.

Sorry Fran meant to give you credit for that post when I brought it over!
Phone rang & need I say more???? LOL

I've also been keeping up with Brandon. Each day I figure they'll find him. Not looking good at all. I highly doubt he walked into the river & drowned himself.

Hey, we're in this together! I don't need credit. :)

I was putting off mentioning Brandon here until yesterday, thinking they would find him. I just talked about him in the general page because I was still hoping they'd find him and NOT really wanting to add him to the list. It's sad and scary, but once they're on this list, they don't come off.....

Now that makes two present case college students they're looking for at this very minute.

This case is sooo disturbing.

Associated Press

Last update: May 23, 2008 - 3:26 PM

MARSHALL, Minn. - The family of a missing Marshall man is organizing another group of volunteers to continue the search for him.

Nineteen-year-old Brandon Swanson has been missing since the morning of May 14

<<<<snip>>>>

Lincoln County Sheriff Jack Vizecky suspects a tragic accident happened. He says if Swanson went into the river, it could take weeks for the body to emerge from the cold water.

Brandon is still missing.

Brandon's parents must be sick at heart. :( It just seems hopeless when LE gives up.

Volunteers Extend Search For Missing Teen

The search for 19-year-old Brandon Swanson, of Marshall, continued Saturday without help from law enforcement. It's been ten days since Swanson went missing and authorities in southwest Minnesota say they still don't have any leads. The Lyon County Sheriff's office has ended it's search for Swanson until more evidence is found. But volunteers are helping the family keep the search going.

When the town heard law enforcement was ending their portion of the search, the Marshall paper and a few local churches put out requests for volunteers. Dozens responded and now, have kept the search going strong.

Sheriff: Brandon Swanson Is Probably Dead

The Lincoln County, Minnesota sheriff says that a missing Marshall man probably died accidentally in the Yellow Medicine River.

This is unbelievable. No explanation, 0 accountabilty.

I guess the fact that 40 men before accidentally drowned too, explains everything!

Either young men aren't taught how to swim there, or they have a serious SERIAL KILLER out there that is offing these young men.

Are these men raped? Are they stalked? Or I guess they just woke up one morning and said "Wow, I think I'll just go and drown myself". Why not, 40 before me did. What the heck!!!

The FBI has to have more proof here, not a lame excuse that,
:These men just drowned: :(

Maybe now with that case breaking in Wisconsin about the TWO separate guys found bound at the perv's house, maybe LE will take a second look at some of these cases. Who knows?

Now we KNOW there was at least one perv loose! and his victims AND the circumstances fit right in with these profiles!

JMHO

They're still looking for Brandon. :(

A hog roast benefit will be held on Sunday in the 4-H building of the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Marshall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will help cover the costs of searching for Swanson and Thrivent Financial has promised to match any funds raised.

PIEHL: 'Smiley Face Killers' - Your Questions

Almost everyday, someone emails me a question about the Smiley Face Killer story or a missing persons case. If one person has a question and sends it to me, then there must be more people thinking the same thing.

Here are the answers to a few questions that I've recently received.

..........................................................................................

2. "What about Brandon Swanson?"

Brandon Swanson disappeared near Marshall in May. Dedicated search crews are spending some weekends looking for him. Swanson's car was recovered, but there hasn't been any sign of him.

There is no reason to believe that Swanson's case is related to any others. However, many people have asked me about it because Swanson fits the general description of other men who have disappeared or been found drowned.

Dan Zamlen hasn't been seen since 3 a.m. Sunday morning. He'd left a party and was talking to a friend on a cell phone who was coming to pick him up. He was near the Mississippi river.

This is clipped from the link above:
"The last part of the phone conversation was just like ... getting further and further away. Either he was getting away from the phone or the phone was getting away further away from him. And then it was eventually very quiet," said Anna Chappuis, who said she was the last person to talk to Zamlen on the phone.

"Then the conversation just took a bad turn and there was like 'Help' and 'Oh my God,'" said Chappuis.

Here's the story from the Pioneer Press, which I also posted under General Discussion #5.

DZ was diabetic, should not have been drinking, which is a concern of the family. He may have been having problems as he left the party, since he walked 4 blocks west in the wrong direction from his residence. If he was heading back to his residence, he should have walked 9 blocks north. See map at link. I'm very familiar with that area. Mississippi Blvd. S is high above the river; there is a paved trail between the road and the river. IMO it would be unreasonable for DZ to have fallen into the river. I believe he may not have realized where he was or where he was going. Maybe going into shock?

Please note that this is a very nice neighborhood. The speed limit is 25mph, meaning Mississippi Blvd. S does not get a lot of traffic, especially around 2:20a. If I correctly recall CJ disappeared around Lake Street. Lake Street is another animal.

I agree that he could've been disoriented. It could've been part of the reason that he ended up in an argument with someone in the first place. The people that I know that are diabetic can become quite irritable when their blood sugar isn't right. I'm also very familiar with the area and I agree that it's a nice neighborhood...yet if you were on the other side of the river, you'd only be about eight blocks away from Lake street. I'm not saying that to argue that something could've happened. Just wanted to clarify for people that don't know about the area. I hope he's okay and hasn't come across someone with bad intentions.
