KBI takes new look at Eastern Kansas drowning

Kansas - The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the death of a college student found dead at an eastern Kansas lake just over a year ago.

Agents re-opened the case of Derrick Heidt after his parents questioned the ruling that his death at Pomona Lake was accidental. Kevin and Debbie Heidt of Colorado have believed since their son died that someone killed him.

The KBI said it expects to issue a report soon. Osage County Sheriff Lori Dunn requested the review, at the urging of the Heidts.

Derrick Heidt's body was found at Pomona Lake, a fishing and camping spot about 25 miles west of Ottawa, by a passer-by who called police.

The night before, Derrick Heidt had phoned his father in a panic. He said he was driving around lost and was being followed by another vehicle.

"We would lose his cellphone connections and within an hour we got five or six calls (from him) trying to figure out where he was," Kevin Heidt said.

With Derrick Heidt giving descriptions and Kevin Heidt using a map, they pinpointed his location, the father said. Then the phone connection was lost again.

It's the last time Kevin Heidt talked to his son.

Barton County?! I was born there, grew up there! But Ponoma Lake, that isn't in Barton County, I don't think. Let me look it up. Ottawa is nearer to here, in SE Kansas than Central Kansas. ETA: Ok, I had to look it up, and I was sort of right. Ottawa and Ponoma Lake are closer to where I live here in SE Kansas, than Great Bend. (Where the Barton County Community College is.) Barton County Kansas, Great Bend Kansas, Osage County Kansas where he died, Ottawa Kansas.

<State Initial> BI is basically a state level FBI. They work with the FBI and have similar authority, but on a state level. More than one state has such a thing. :)
