VALLEY PARK, Missouri (CNN) -- A suspect held in connection with the disappearance Friday of a 6-year-old girl led authorities to a body police believe is that of Cassandra "Casey" Williamson, St. Louis County Police Chief Ron Battelle told CNN.

The drama gripped U.S. television viewers all day Friday, from the morning hours when the girl was reported missing to late afternoon, when a body matching her description was found in an abandoned glass factory near the girl's neighborhood.

Johnny Johnson, a 24-year-old transient, had been taken into custody.

On the morning of July 26, 2002, 6-year-old Cassandra "Casey" Williamson disappeared from the home her father shared a roommate. Her father, Ernest Williamson, last saw her around 7am in the living room with Johnny Johnson, an ex-convict described as a "transient", who was also staying with them that night. Williamson went to the bathroom and when he returned, Casey and Johnson were both gone.

Casey's disappearance didn't get the media attention some other missing children had that summer. Just a couple of weeks earlier, in California, 5-year-old Samantha Runnion was abducted and killed. A month before that, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was taken from the bedroom of her Salt Lake City home. A few months before that, 7-year-old Danielle van Dam was taken from the bedroom of her San Diego home. The abduction of a lower-middle-class girl in Valley Park, Missouri, hardly showed up on the national media's radar.

But about 100 people joined in the search, and Casey's body was found that afternoon. Johnson was arrested, confessed, and charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, attempted rape and armed criminal action. He could face the death penalty.

Police say Johnson told them he killed Casey when she resisted his attempt to sexually assault her. Police say, without elaborating, that the abduction was premeditated.

Trial to begin Monday for man accused in girl's 2002 slaying

ST. LOUIS - Two-and-a-half years after his arrest, an ex-convict drifter goes on trial this week in the slaying of a 6-year-old girl he allegedly carried piggyback to her death near the ruins of a glass factory.

Jury selection was to begin Monday in the death-penalty case of Johnny Johnson, charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping, attempted rape and armed criminal action in the death of Cassandra "Casey" Williamson.

When later stopped and questioned by police, Johnson - wet and muddy - said he had been swimming in the river, authorities said. The body of the girl, who would have been a first-grader this fall, was found covered in leaves and rocks near the old factory after a seven-hour search.

An autopsy showed Casey died after being hit by a blunt object.

Johnson had spent three to four days as an invited guest at a home shared by Casey's father, Ernie Williamson, and a roommate. Ernie Williamson said he had only known Johnson a few days before the slaying.

Johnson, who authorities said confessed to the crime, has been held without bond in the St. Louis County jail.

His prosecution has been delayed while Johnson underwent psychological testing.

The Williamson family knew the family of Johnny Johnson. I'm sure they regret that decision now of course :( . Johnson has received the death penalty for Casey's murder. You can read about the verdict at www.stltoday.com.

I'm sure they do, but regret isn't going to bring their daughter back~ WHEN are parents going to THINK????????

I know Casey's mother and two of her aunts. I'm glad this case is finally closed. They will never have complete closure, but at least the trial is finished and this creep won't be back on the street.
