The world's first condoms were made out of linen and dipped in salt water which acted as a spermicide, according to historians.
Research on historic condoms was presented as part of an exhibition being staged in Berlin to promote safe sex.
It says that linen condoms soaked in salt water were widely used in the 16th century.
