I've decided that it would be a lot easier to have a merged thread regarding all of the unsolved homicides in Madison. I'll make a list of all 8 that have happened in recent memory. I find myself posting the exact same relevant information in both Brittany Zimmermann and Joel Marino's threads... so the info that relates to both of them will just go here. Here is a link to their individual threads in case there is ever news that only pertains to one....

L.A. Times: Madison casts a cold eye on its homeless

P.J. Huffstutter
The Los Angeles Times
— 5/28/2008 12:58 pm

MADISON, WIS. -- There was a time when residents in this liberal college city would greet homeless people by name.

They'd stop to chat with Scanner Dan, the grizzled guy with a walkie-talkie buzzing at his hip as he asked for change. They'd offer odd jobs to a man known as Snowball, who was rumored to have been a smuggler for the Chicago mob during Prohibition.

Then two violent slayings in less than three months shook residents in the state capital, which is also home to the main campus of the University of Wisconsin.

Both victims were stabbed in their homes in the middle of the day by strangers, police said.

Though investigators have no suspects, the police focused on the city's homeless and transients, among others. Now a backlash against Madison's down-and-out population is brewing.

And that is causing some soul-searching in Madison, sometimes referred to as "the Berkeley of the Midwest," after the University of California campus city known for its liberal politics and values shaped by the 1960s counterculture.

"It used to be the homeless were tolerated and somewhat supported," said former six-term Mayor Paul Soglin, who led the city during antiwar riots in the 1970s. "But the combination of more homeless, more aggressive panhandling and these recent crimes has led to some not-so-politically-correct views."

After student Brittany Zimmermann was killed April 2, police interviewed dozens of homeless in the downtown area.
Police took DNA samples from some of the panhandlers, and more than a dozen were arrested on unrelated charges, Madison police Officer Meredith York said.

But department spokesman Joel DeSpain said "the homeless have been a focus, not the only focus" in Zimmermann's death and the January slaying of businessman Joel Anthony Marino, 31.

The latest article on our 911 crisis:

More 911 staff is on the way
Falk agrees to new hires after saying staffing is adequate
Jason Shepard on Thursday 05/29/2008 http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=22777#articleComments, (2) Recommendations

After a month of questions about the adequacy of Dane County's 911 system, the Dane County Board is expected next week to create two new 911 dispatcher positions. The board could also authorize the second independent audit of the 911 Center in five years.
"There's widespread agreement on these two items, and I'd be surprised if they don't happen," says Dane County Board Chair Scott McDonell.
The plan is something of an about-face for County Executive Kathleen Falk, who three weeks ago asserted, "No one has suggested we are inadequately staffed." She said this the day after Isthmus published a story ("Short-Staffed Almost Always," 5/9/08) that quoted three former Dane County 911 dispatchers complaining about longstanding staffing problems. Last week, a current dispatcher told a listening session that "sometimes the staff is adequate, sometimes it's not."

Kevin Cobbins murder is not unsolved. It has just not yet gone to trial.

"Long-sought murder suspect James P. Bohanan was arrested Monday afternoon in Chicago, the Madison Police Department said.

Bohanan, who celebrated his 35th birthday Friday, was arrested by a team of investigators from the U.S. Marshal's Service, the Great Lakes Regional Task Force and the Chicago Police Department's Fugitive Squad at about 1:30 p.m. in a Chicago apartment.

Bohanan has been wanted since last summer, when he was accused of shooting and killing Kevin Cobbins, 26, at a duplex on Loreen Drive on Madison's west side. Police have been looking for him in both Madison and Chicago and a recent tip to Madison detectives last week led police to the Chicago apartment where Bohanan was taken without incident, police said."

I just heard on NBC15 news that there is a suspect in custody for the shooting of Kevin Cobbins

James P. Bohanan, 35, was ordered Tuesday to stand trial in the July 28 shooting death of a Waunakee man on Madison's West Side.
At a preliminary hearing before Dane County Circuit Judge Stuart Schwartz, a witness testified that Bohanan shot Kevin K. Cobbins several times leaving a party at a duplex at 1305 Loreen Drive in the early morning hours.

Today, Madison Police Detectives, in conjunction with Minnesota law enforcement, made the arrest and are awaiting extradition paperwork to be completed. As of this news release, the suspect has not been formally charged in this case.

The Capitol Times reports that although the police department gave no specifics about the case, a law enforcement source said detectives were checking through mental health records when they discovered a man who closely fit the description of a drawing of a subject seen near the murder scene.

When detectives went to Minnesota to interview the man, the source said, he admitted to killing Marino. (emphasis mine, gg)

“I know this has been a real concern in the community and although there is a suspect in custody, there is a lot of hard work to still be completed by the Madison Police Department,” stated Chief Noble Wray. “This remains an open investigation and detectives have more work to do to complete this case, including forensic analysis and more follow up.”

This is great news for his family. I'm just praying they have the right person.

MADISON, Wis. -- A 20-year-old Minnesota man was formally charged on Friday with first-degree intentional homicide in connection with the fatal stabbing of Madison resident Joel Marino last January.

Adam Charles Peterson, who's currently a resident of Grant, Minn., was arrested on Thursday in Minnesota, according to Madison police.

Wray said that investigators submitted DNA samples from Peterson to the State Crime Lab for analysis and those samples matched those at the Marino homicide scene.

Police said that Peterson waived extradition and should appear in a Wisconsin court in the near future.

Wray said that there's no current forensic connection between Peterson and another recent Madison killing, the death of UW student Brittany Zimmermann in early April.

To all websleuth’s,

My name is Peter and I am a psychology and criminology student from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia and I am currently preparing to do a complete deductive and accurate psychological criminal profile from an unsolved murder case. The unsolved case for which I am working on is the Capital City Murders in Madison Wisconsin between 1968 and 1984. I assure you that I am taking this matter very seriously and will be approaching this matter with the upmost respect for the families involved. The information that already exists in regards to these murders on the Internet does not provide adequate precise information and facts that are required to put together a correctly deduced profile. Crime scene photos, forensic evidence, complete victimology reports, coroner’s reports, crime scene documentation, and police reports are a minimum requirement to begin any criminal profile, but unfortunately I am lacking collaborated facts when it comes to allot of this information, and that is why I am here to ask for any assistance from those who may already posses the necessary information and facts that I require and lack. I have tried in vain to contact authorities from the FBI and the local Madison police department, but all of my requests for information have gone unanswered. I realize that I am an only a student, but I am approaching this with a genuine conviction and passion to complete it with a high level of professionalism.
I would greatly appreciate any assistance and any additional factual information that anyone may be able to offer, with an assurance that if any additional information be discovered that may aid in providing future leads and providing some closure for the families involved, that it will be surely and quickly passed onto the correct authorities.
Thank you for your time
Peter.

You may want to search other threads since the murders in this thread are more recent. If there isn't a thread that has some of the information that you're after, then you may want to start one?

Good luck,

We have a somewhat dated, yet extremely important thread intact right now regarding all and any WISCONSIN unsolved murders.
