DEVORE, Calif.—Human remains that may have been buried for several years were found by a homeowner digging in the backyard, authorities said Thursday.
The bones were uncovered Monday in the homeowner's backyard near Interstate 15 in Cajon Pass, said San Bernardino County sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Beavers.

Deputies determined the remains were human because some clothing was found with the bones.

Investigators estimate the remains may have been buried for more than 15 years, because the homeowner had been living there since 1993, Beavers said.

The remains were transported to the coroner's office where officials will use dental records to determine the person's identity, she said.

There were a slew of kids who went missing in California in the late 80s/early 90s. I wonder if this could be one of them.

There were terrible mudslides in Devore not too long ago, also. I'm not saying this is a victim of those mudslides as they occurred in 2003, I'm just remembering that some folks were still missing after the fact.

He's not a mudslide victim because he was buried in a metal box.

There's a new facial reconstruction for this John Doe:

I think it is safe to say that unless the homeowner had something to do with burying the guy the date of death is between 1990 and 1993, if the sneakers were not made before 1990.

I took a closer look at the Namus and Doe links and I am a bit confused.

they know his height and have his pants so you'd think they could give a weight estimate but they don't even try to provide a range.

also, the guy was buried in a metal box with his clothes on but no hair was present? I don't know how that is possible unless someone buried a skeleton. I am assuming they put brown hair on the bust as it is the most common hair color.

finally, they show him wearing some sort of jewelry around his neck but there is no reference at all to jewelry being found with him. I have no idea why that object is depicted.

not a bad facial resemblance to Austin Jay Smith, age 23 missing from El Monte, LA County, CA on March 23, 1993. Austin was 5'6":

I noticed Austin Smith, too. The clothing he was last seen in was a little different than what the UID was found in, but there is definitely a resemblance. El Monte is off of the 605, it wouldn't be that difficult for the perpetrator to take the 605 to the 15 to Devore (sort of like going towards Las Vegas).

I can't find anything online about ConWave shoes/sneakers other than in connection with this UID. it was said Austin was wearing grey that night - grey and yellow plaid shirt, grey dress pants and grey dress shoes. the UID was wearing black denim Union Bay pants with distinctive buttons and white and blue high tops.

I usually don't put too much stock in the clothing but who knows how accurate the clothing description for Austin was or whether he had an opportunity to change clothing after he was last seen.

BBM. He might have been bald.

I e-mailed San Bernardino County and asked if Jay Austin Smith had been compared as this unidentified man. I received an e-mail today from Bob Hunter of the San Bernardino County Sheriff - Coroner 's office stating
In reviewing the dental information it does not appear to be the same individual. However, I will do some additional research on this possible match.

Austin Smith has officially been ruled out. here is the list:

Jonathon Aujay 1959 California
Adam Kellner 1973 California
Christopher King 1950 California
Roger Madison 1953 California
Teddy Morris 1964 California
Amos Mortier 1977 Wisconsin
Austin Smith 1969 California
Shaun Steward 1978 Arizona

this MP make alot of sense, David Cameron Dahle, age 32, about 5'8"-5'11", missing Oct 1, 1991 from San Bernadino County. only problem is they have no identifiers for him.
