GUILTY NC - Sgt. William 'Bill' Miller, 27, shot to death, Jacksonville, 16 Sept 1972

Thats great news. It does give one hope that old cases can be solved. :)
I hope the murdered Marine can rest in peace and his family now have some answers.

This goes to show that even officers of the law can be guilty. I believe the overall majority of officers are fine people. But as for my family we know that is not always the case. I have a family member who was found shot in the back of the head. Her death was ruled a suicide. I don't know to many suicide victims who shoot themselves in the back of the head... muchless after buying groceries and paying their rent ahead for 2 months.

I guess some murders will never be solved... especially if they are considered suicides.. and an officer was possibly involved.

Sgt. Miller was buried at Arlington National Cemetery; there's some vintage MSM about the case preserved on his memorial page:

The former Belhaven police chief has been found guilty of murder. The verdict came down just before 2:50 p.m. after three days of deliberations.

George Hayden was sentenced to life in prison and then led off to the Onslow County jail in handcuffs.

From December 2010:

After 40 years, an Onslow County cold case is being resolved. Officers had charged three people, for the 1972 murder of marine William Miller, but only one is going to prison for the crime...

At the time of the murder, Hayden was having an affair with Miller's wife Vickie. Deputies say Hayden and Babbit lured Miller to Western boulevard where Hayden shot Miller in the back, killing him...

Gill kept changing his testimony of whether or not he was at the scene of the crime. The District Attorney said that inconsistency is one of several reasons the charges against Gill and Babbit were dropped. Also, that no evidence could be found that Gill helped Hayden kill Miller or that Babbit helped Hayden plan the murder.
