FWIW, the media follows him everywhere. The media would have been there whether it was a publicity stunt or not.

He has his own pool of reporters, now, just like the President does. Where he goes, they go. What if there was an assassination attempt? They'd want to be there, obviously.

ETA: When he was just a candiate, he did the exact same thing in a small town near me, and never told the media, which actually made the media quite angry.
 
Let me point out, I think EVERYTHING any politician does is for publicity.
