Central Floridians mourn Caylee Anthony at Orlando service
Caylee Anthony memorial service

Finally, a day just to honor Caylee Marie.

No protesters spewing hate about her mother. No news conferences. No bounty hunters stealing the spotlight. People I spoke to mentioned how beautiful they thought the service was instead of sharing theories on how the 2-year-old died.

The toddler's memorial service was no sideshow -- thank goodness.

Grandparents George and Cindy Anthony speak tenderly of Caylee

On Tuesday, George Anthony, his wife and their son stood together in their first public appearance since Caylee's remains were found in December, sharing stories of the child who captured hearts across the nation.
A crowd of about 1,100 people -- many of whom never met Caylee -- got a glimpse of the joy she brought to her family.
It was unclear whether the 22-year-old, who is charged with killing her child, watched or listened to the service, which was broadcast live on local news channels. But Cindy Anthony, who has not visited her daughter in jail for months, addressed her from the sanctuary.
Anthony's attorney, Jos Baez, met with her for two hours Tuesday but gave few details to reporters waiting for him outside the jail.
"It was important for me to be here with her -- to be with her at this time," Baez said. "It's very frankly a private matter, and that's the way it should be."
Reporters asked: How did Anthony feel? What did she say? Did she watch the service? Baez wouldn't answer.
"I'm not going to comment on what she does or doesn't do," he said.

Bounty hunter Leonard Padilla leads alternate Caylee Anthony memorial

With tears, prayers and toys in hand, more than 70 people gathered near a small patch of woods in southeast Orange County where the remains of Caylee Marie Anthony were found.
People gathered for an impromptu service Tuesday morning, led by a California bounty hunter who inserted himself in the case of the missing girl and her 22-year-old mother, Casey Anthony, now in jail and charged with the child's murder.
"This isn't anything that was planned," said bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, who was once welcomed into the Anthony household when he helped secure a bond for Casey. He later revoked it, stating that the mother wasn't cooperating in the search for her child.
"I didn't know Caylee, but I feel like I did," he said Tuesday.

Caylee Anthony: The public fell in love with her, not her family
posted by halboedeker on Feb 10, 2009 7:12:18 PM

And so Caylee's day became about Casey -- Caylee could never have the focus to herself. Cindy's comments of affection for Casey became a top headline.
Watching the Anthonys at the service drove home the point: The public fell in love with Caylee, not with her family. I'm not sure the family understands that point. Through the months, the family had often come off as self-indulgent, self-pitying, out of touch. Then they were mostly out of sight after Caylee's remains were found. Seeing the Anthonys in the spotlight again was jarring. Perhaps delivering those comments was cathartic for them.
Yet their speeches suggested they haven't changed. And Cindy Anthony was determined to have the last word, from her seat in the church.
And the Anthonys spoke. I fear it was more about them than Caylee.

The attorney representing Casey Anthony In a civil defamation suit has asked that the case be tossed out of court.

Zenaida Gonzalez is suing because Casey claimed someone with that name babysat and then disappeared with Caylee. She said the case has ruined her name.
Casey's attorney filed the motion to dismiss the case this week.
There's no word on when a judge could rule.

UPDATED: Anthonys Seek Private Jail Visit With Casey
Family Does Not Videotape Of Visit Released To Public
POSTED: 2:54 pm EST February 11, 2009

A spokesman for Orange County corrections told WESH 2 it would be up to the sheriff's department to decide whether to videotape the visit.
Brad Conway, the Anthonys attorney, said the family realizes the video session with Casey Anthony would have to be monitored by jail staff but they do not want a video of it released.
George Anthony will be a key witness in the state's murder case against his daughter, just as he gave evidence to the grand jury that indicted her.

Memorial Service May Have Sparked Rift In Family
Caylee Anthony's memorial service exposed a developing rift between what George and Cindy Anthony wanted versus Casey Anthony's desires. Casey Anthony's defense attorney, Jose Baez, said it is nothing more than a disagreement. "It’s a private matter between the family," Baez said.
Baez said he did not appreciate the negative spin put on his client's statement. Casey Anthony did not want a public memorial, and did not agree with her parents’ plans to cremate Caylee's remains.

"Just because of simple disagreements it does not mean there's a rift between the family or anything like that," Baez said. Members of George and Cindy Anthony's inner circle said they resented Baez's statement on Casey Anthony's behalf and how long it took the defense team to get Caylee's remains. The couple's lawyer would not address the controversy outside Caylee's memorial.

Casey Anthony Trial Could Be Year Away
Wednesday, February 11, 2009 – updated: 5:37 pm EST February 11, 2009

The start of Casey Anthony's murder trial could be as long as a year away. There are many things, legally and in the investigation, that still need to be completed.
Eyewitness News believes evidence discovered where Caylee's remains were found and at her house are still being tested. According to defense expert Dr. Henry Lee's writings, Casey's defense team could be going so far as to analyze the root growth of plants to determine how long Caylee's body was there.
Once the testing of the evidence is done, the defense will go into research and attack mode.

Casey Anthony's lawyer no longer affiliated with media firm
Amy L. Edwards | Sentinel Staff Writer

Casey Anthony's defense attorney has been criticized for his choice of a media firm -- and the recent revelation that a man who served prison time for attempting to extort a journalist has acted as the lawyer's spokesman.
But Jose Baez and that company have parted ways, the Orlando Sentinel learned today.
In a statement e-mailed to the Sentinel, Baez said, "Press Corps Media is no longer affiliated with The Baez Law Firm."

The Kissimmee lawyer did not comment further.

Attorney says Caylee Anthony has been cremated

One day after Caylee Marie Anthony's memorial service, the lawyer representing the toddler's grandparents confirmed the girl's remains have been cremated and that they are not located at her family's home.
Attorney Brad Conway, who represents George and Cindy Anthony, wouldn't say where Caylee's remains are being kept.

Conway also addressed a question many were left wondering after Tuesday's memorial: Who was her uncle Lee Anthony referring to when he repeatedly said "CMA?"
Who is "CMA?"
Lee Anthony was "talking to all of them," Conway said.
"He wanted his sister to know he loves her."

Caylee Anthony: WKMG asks why the toddler was cremated
posted by halboedeker on Feb 11, 2009 6:32:56 PM

<snipped>
A day after Caylee Anthony's memorial, WKMG-Channel 6 explored why the toddler was cremated.
The child's death certificate was filed today, and she was cremated in the past few days, WKMG's Adam Longo reported. Brad Conway, attorney for George and Cindy Anthony, said the grandparents decided on the cremation to protect the child. Longo reported that the grandparents are not keeping the ashes in their home -- they fear vandals -- and they don't want a marked grave either.
WESH showed Jose Baez, Casey Anthony's attorney, saying the next step is sorting out what evidence is real and what is junk. WESH's Bob Kealing quoted "sources close to the investigation" who say they want to question Lee Anthony more about what he knew when niece Caylee was missing.

WFTV-Channel 9's Kathi Belich said, "It's our understanding that a lot of the evidence ... is still being tested." That material includes what was found with the toddler's remains and what was gathered at the Anthony home. She also speculated, based on Dr. Henry Lee's recent writings, that the defense team might use root growth at the scene to figure out how long Caylee's body was there.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread, if not, I apologize in advance.

This is an update from CNN's Crime blog re: Caylee.

Wednesday Feb 11, 2009

5:30 PM ET - Just moments ago, we learn the medical examiner was notified of a request to cremate Caylee's remains. The approval was given on December 31, but as of today, still no confirmation if this has taken place. In a statement read by her lead attorney, tot mom Casey Anthony revealed Caylee's remains have been cremated. But George and Cindy Anthony's attorney says no. The medical examiner says it's out of their hands and up to the Anthonys and the funeral home as to when the cremation will take place. (From Stacey Newman, Nancy Grace Producer)
