Deb Royle welcomes clients of any sexual orientation at her day spa.

But that's day spa, with a D.

A typo in the new Verizon phone directory paints a misleading picture. Royle's Manlius business, A Royal Treatment, is the first one advertised under Beauty Salons.

According to the ad, it is "A RELAXING GAY SPA."

The ad has prompted about three calls a day, Royle said.

There are the jokers who leave snickering messages. There are serious inquiries about whether Royal Treatment is a bath house. (It is not.)

And there are calls asking if straight people are still welcome.

"It's taken a lot of time out of our workweek to answer these calls," she said.

Royle said Verizon has offered to reimburse the cost of the ad, but she wants compensation.

Still, she's taking the mistake in stride. Who knows, she said, it might even increase her business.

"I'm hoping all it's going to do is attract some people that normally wouldn't be here," she said. "I'm an eternal optimist. I'm hoping in the long run, this will turn out to be a good thing."

A mistake like this can sink a small business in a years time. Compensation is definately called for here, to be spent on year long damage control advertising.

My Opinion!
