A skull found in a Willacy County canal this month matches the dental records of an elderly Mission woman missing since August.

Investigators are awaiting DNA analysis of the skeletal remains, but Hidalgo County Assistant Distant Attorney Michelle Puig told The McAllen Monitor Friday that the dental records match Josefina Lugo.

"It's her," Puig said. "But we want to make absolutely sure."

Lugo, 68, disappeared as she prepared to leave her husband, Pedro Lugo.

He and her stepson, Javier Lugo, are charged with her murder. A severed arm found in a canal in Willacy County last fall also matched Josefina Lugo.
