Both Joseph’s mother, Sheila Roberson, and Patterson Chief of Police Patrick LaSalle said the couple does have a history of abuse.

Houma resident Dewayne Lakeith Joseph, 32, was found guilty of first degree murder in the death of his wife, Delores, here last week. Sentencing was set for today, Feb. 9, but the death penalty was taken off the table due to a finding by a court-ordered examination that Joseph is mentally challenged.

Joseph, who had a history of domestic violence against his spouse with at least two prior complaints, murdered his wife late Feb. 26 or early Feb. 27, 2009, after she met him there to pick up money to take their child, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, to New Orleans for treatment.

Joseph beat her unconscious then taped her hands, feet and mouth, chained her to a dolly, loaded her into the trunk of her Buick and threw her into Harbor Estates Canal in Stephensville, resulting in her drowning.
