Gerald Carnahan is finally going on trial for the murder of Jackie Johns. He stands accused of abducting, raping and killing Jackie dumping her body in Springfield Lake. Gerald has quite a long history of violent and erractic behavior. Just to recap:

  • his wife took a restraining order out on him after he threatened to kidnap and kill her.
  • In 1993 he was arrested for trying to abduct an 18 yr old girl on Ingram MIll Road.
  • He was arrested at a later date for wielding a gun while intoxicated.
  • He was arrested again for trying to burn down a competitors business and was charged with arson and burglary.
  • Arrested again for letting the brake fluid out of his neighbors car.
  • In the months after Jackie's murder he was arrested in L.A. for tampering with evidence in her case.
  • arrested for lying to the original grand jury and unbelievably it was another 20 yrs before he was finally arrested.

The trial in a twenty-four year old murder case that was supposed to be heard at the end of the month has been postponed yet again.

Defense attorney Dee Wampler says that he and Greene County Prosecutor Darrell Moore will meet with Judge Michael Jamison next Thursday in St. Louis and come up with another trial date for Gerald Carnahan. Wampler says, " DNA testing and taking depositions in the case are the reason for the postponement."

Anyone know who the driver was when Carnahan abducted Heather Starkey on Ingram Mill Rd.???????

This would help TREMENDOUSLY if someone could post that here!

Wouldn't it be in the Police Reports, Court Records, or at least News Paper reports? If I remember correctly it was said that the car he was driving was a rental car? Could there be any records in the original rental car transaction that would indicate who was with him that day.....just a thought, you never know, may be Carnahan had the other guy actually rent the car?

In a new book about the Jackie Johns murder (Murder on a Lonely Road by George Pawlacyk and Beth Hunsdorfer), a man named Eric Turnage is named as the driver.

Eric Turnage died in January 2015

His parents and brothers are still living. From his obituary, it appears his family has long been involved in the Evangel Temple and Central Assembly Churches in Springfield.
Local pit bull trial attorney (and ultra-conservative Christian) Dee Wampler has always defended criminals who were closely affiliated with local Christian churches. Wampler also defended Carnahan. I've always suspected Wampler was behind a lot of the negative gossip that surrounded the disappearances of the Springfield Three, blaming Sheryl and her daughter for hanging out with the wrong people, etc. I've also suspected Wampler's intimidating tactics are why the local news media and law enforcement are so careful about pursuing this case.

Not that it matters much at this point, but Turnage is mentioned in this article as being key to the Prosecution's case as he said that Carnahan essentially tried to bribe him after the attempting kidnapping of Starkey.

Interesting. The obit above names one of his brothers as Marc Turnage, who also happens to be list in the 1992 Kickapoo graduating class as a classmate of Suzy and Stacy. It may be a tenuous string but that could have provided an intersection with Eric (and possibly Carnahan) either on graduation night at the parties (out with his little brother) or at a prior point.

But I have no idea what kind of a person Eric was. The Starkey incident with Carnahan could have been a fluke or might have been part of a coordinated efforts.
