An extensive air and ground search failed to lead Cass County authorities to a missing Staples man, so they're turning to the public for help.

Peter Achermann, 82, was last seen Friday afternoon in Staples.

His 1995 Chevrolet station wagon was found Saturday evening. Authorities launched a search of the area where the vehicle was found.

Members of the Cass and Wadena Sheriff's departments, Motley and Staples Fire Departments, Central Lakes Search and Rescue, community volunteers, family members, the Lakes Area Dive Team along with aircraft from the Minnesota State Patrol searched the area.

Achermann is 5-foot, 9-inches tall with a grey beard and generally walks with a cane.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Cass County Sheriff's Office at 218-547-1424 or 1-800-450-2677.

Search for missing Staples man enters second week

STAPLES - The search for a missing 82-year-old Cass County man has now entered its second week, but law enforcement and the public are continuing the search effort northeast of Staples.

Peter Achermann, 82, of rural Staples, has now been missing for seven days and has not been seen since the late afternoon of July 24 at a Staples location. His 1995 Chevrolet station wagon he was driving was located Saturday evening abandoned and stuck on a dead-end dirt road in northern Becker Township in Cass County, northeast of Staples.

Public wishing to assist in the Achermann search should call (218) 547-1424 or go the search staging area.

From Staples: take County Road 33 (Warner Road) east until you cross the Crow Wing River Bridge into Cass County, take the next left on County Road 32 and go two miles, then take a right onto 85th Ave. Southwest and travel a short distance to the stage area.

From Motley: Take state Highway 64 about 2.5 miles north, turn left on County Road 33 (Warner Road), travel west until you reach County Road 32, turn right and travel two miles, take a right onto 85th Ave. Southwest and travel a short distance to the stage area.

Search area expanded for missing Staples man; No new significant clues have been found

STAPLES - The search for missing 82-year-old Staples man in Cass County is now the 10th day with searchers finding no new significant clues since locating his car July 25 on a remote road in a southwestern Cass County township.

Peter Achermann, 82, of rural Staples, has been missing since July 24 when he was last seen in Staples. His 1995 Chevrolet station wagon he was driving was located July 26 stuck in a mud hole on a dead-end minimum maintenance road in northern Becker Township in Cass County, located about six miles northeast of Staples.

Authorities have expanded the geographic search area over the weekend to a 2.5 miles radius around the location where Achermann's abandoned car was found. Multiple search dog teams are working the search area.

Volunteers and authorities are continuing the search today, still focusing in north Becker Township.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed an executive order Friday, directing the Minnesota National Guard to help search for Peter Achermann, an 82-year-old Staples man missing for over two weeks.

Bloodhounds join the search for man


The South Dakota man who volunteered his bloodhound search dog to find Erika Dalquist and Dru Sjodin is back in Minnesota to help the family of Peter Achermann.

Denny Adams, owner of Dakota Territory Search Dogs in Conde, S.D., arrived in rural Leader about two weeks ago with bloodhounds Molly and Dru, named in honor of Dru Sjodin. He doesn't plan on leaving until Peter Achermann is found.

"I'm committed to the Achermann family," Adams said while taking a break Tuesday along the minimum maintenance road where Peter Achermann's station wagon was found the day after he went missing more than a month ago. "We're going to stick it out."

Achermann, 82, of rural Leader has been missing since July 24. He was last seen in Staples. Since that time, his family, with the help of the Cass County Sheriff's Department, the Minnesota National Guard, the DNR, the State Patrol, local emergency personnel and hundreds of volunteers have searched every swamp, field and wooded area to find Achermann.

He was in good health. He was to speak at his granddaughter's wedding the next day.

I live in Northern Minnesota, although not in Cass County. The wilderness up here ist thick and wild, and I doubt that Mr. Achermann just walked into the woods. His family aclaims he did not suffer from dementia, so that makes this even more unlikely. The area is also VERY rural, so a criminal event is also unlikely. It's unusual for two cars to even pass on the roads some days.

Where is Peter Achermann from rural Leader/Staples, Minnesota?

Peter has been missing since his strange disappearance between 1-3 PM on Friday July 24th.

When does a full investigation begin into criminal activity? We have been searching for 4 weeks where his car was found. There is no sign that he is or ever was there.

Why did Cass County pull the National Guard assistance after only 2 days of searching a very small area that had already been searched at least three times? Do THEY think he is NOT in that location? Then where?

Why has the car not been processed for signs of foul play? Have all video cameras in Staples been checked for signs of Peter? What about MnDot cameras?

Have the Staples area dumpsters been checked? Have dogs been used to try to pick up Peter’s scent in the dumpsters, the transfer stations, the landfill?

We are down to 5-8 volunteers to continue trying to search. We desperately need a lead.

Please help us and the family to continue searching and bring Peter home.

Please continue to keep this search for Peter alive and get more help.

If the sheriff’s department doesn’t have the resources to fully investigate this mysterious vanishing of Peter, can you help by investigating anything you can to try to find some leads.

How can we get more help from any investigative authority such as the BCA? If this situation was looking for a 5 year old boy or a 16 year old girl, would we be down to only 8-13 volunteers still looking?

Peter was a loving husband, good father, grandfather, and good man who was always first in line to help ANYONE in need. Let’s find him and bring him home for his family.

Peter has no voice at this point. The family and volunteers are now his voice to help find him.

Peter went to town to get his wife's prescription and milk on Friday, July 24, 2009. He met his son from out of state coming in for Peter's granddaughter's wedding the next day and had coffee with him and grandkids.

He then went on to finish his errands. He picked up his wife's prescription, went on the the grocery store, picked up milk and then VANISHED.

He was last seen at 11:45 SM Friday July 24th getting milk at the grocery store. He was expected home by 3:00. He lives about 20 miles north of the grocery store where he was last seen.

His granddaughter was getting married the next day and he was looking forward to seeing all the family.

He did not show up at home by 3:00 as expected, then 4, 5, 7. The family members began frantically looking for his car. No luck.

On Saturday morning, the family began looking for him and his car again. About 7:00 pm Saturday, a local man called the family and said he was told that some one saw his car stuck down a long minimum maintainence road. The family went out to check it and it was Peter's car. They began another frantic search in the heavy brush and woods near where his car was found. Many of the family members skipped the wedding on Saturday to continue looking for Peter.

On Sunday morning, the Cass County sheriff's department became involved and helped coordinate the search. We have searched all the woods, brush, and swamps within a mile of where the car was found.

We have double, triple and even quadruple seached areas around the car. We have now searched about 8 square miles in the area.

We have not found the slightest clue that Peter was even there except for his car. He was wearing a brown shirt, light tan colored pants, wore a red, white, and blue beret, cigars, lighter, had a cane and crucifix with him. We found nothing. We have even been watching for any human defication in the woods, nothing.

Peter had no dementia or alzheimers. He was a very healthy 82 year old man who spent his days helping others. He regularly brought the elderly and incapacitated to doctors appointments. He brought groceries to homebound elderly.

His disappearance is COMPLETELY out of character for him.

How could this healthy sane man make so many mistakes to get lost in the woods. First, took the wrong road to go home (co rd 32), second, took another wrong dead end road (85th Ave), third, go down a POSTED dead end minimum maintenance road where the grass and brush was higher than the car, fourth, get stuck in a mud hole, fifth, get out of the car and start walking through thick brush and woods with NO trails.

IF he did drive back there, why would he not simply turn around and walk back down the road to the first (or second, third, fourth, etc) house and ask to use a phone.

THIS ENTIRE SITUATION DOES NOT MAKE SENSE THAT PETER MADE ALL THESE ERRORS. HE WAS A SMART MAN.

The Cass County sheriff's department says that it does not suspect foul play. Doesn't make sense, does it?

I am not a family member just a family friend and active searcher. I have an 87 year old father and can relate to the family's desparation.

From what you are describing of Peter A's disappearance, something has gone terribly wrong.
Perhaps, he had a stroke? But then, you would have found him by now.
The good part is that so many people are looking for him.

My theories, either

1. Peter had a medical emergency (stroke?) which caused him not to think clearly, make the wrong decisions, and go off into the woods.

or

2. He met foul play of some kind and someone else took his car and left it where it was found.

Any others?
